Part 1

The story I went with was One More To Lake by E.B White. To me his story felt poetic. He was mesmerized by the smells of the cabin he would stay in as a child. Reason being that I chose poetic writing for E.B White is because how he carefully he chose his words for his story. “I guess I remembered clearest of all the mornings, when the lake was cool and motionless, remembered how the bedroom smelled of lumber it was made of and of the wet woods whose scent entered the screen” (White 97).

Smells can always take you back to a time where you once were. That is what caught my interest. At times when I would wake up in morning in Iraq and would smell the desert I would close my eyes and picture myself in California. I lived in southern California for ten years and every morning It would smell like palm trees with a cold breeze.

Part 2

The article I chose was Growing Up Colored by Henry Louise Gates Jr. “This was a world so elegantly distant from ours, it was like a voyage to another galaxy, light-years away (Gates 56-63). I chose this piece because people have memories of the good times and also of the bad. The author growing up in the 1950’s as a colored boy was not easy because of the racial discrimination. So as an adult he looks back at his past when times were so different. This story was not at all like One More To Lake by E.B White. To me history is very important thus being reason why I chose this article.

Part 3

In the third section of the book, Stephen King describes his love of writing and offers advice on how to succeed as a writer. King’s first point about writing is that constantly reading and writing will help someone become a better writer. Reading can provide a writer with an extended vocabulary, as well as a taste of many different writers’ styles. Writing often will help a writer practice, and the writer can experiment with what works. This is important because King explains that success as a writer requires patience and a great deal of time.…

From all the discussions in class about racism and the different examples we have learned from, an article that really stood out to me was regarding the Trayvon Martin Case. I chose this specific article because it really outlines the aspect of racism in our country. Although America is based on the anthem “land of the free, and home of the brave”, some ethnic groups are not as “free” as others.…
