Political and legal influences
It is agreed upon that nanotechnology, like most emerging technologies, requires proper, consistent, and coherent governance, however legal and regulatory questions associated with the technology remain, mostly due to uncertainty and the public’s lack of trust in what may be considered controversial applications and the transparency of the legislative and regulatory decisions. Considering the vague definition of nanotechnology the Foresight Institute encourages self-regulation within the scientific community in order to avoid legislators poorly informed decisions. However, some commentators believe that the public must be informed of the possible risks and regulations and policies must protect the best interest of the public and minimize risks. The greatest fears related to scientific community, country, or private corporation self-regulation in the absence of globally agreed upon rules and policies concern possible adoption of risky safety policies in favor of possible competitive advantages. Currently, “nanotechnology development and production is geographically widespread, with more than sixty countries pursuing national nanotechnology research and innovation programs (Shapira and Wang, 2010), with the use and application of nanotechnology occurring globally. Regulation and oversight is primarily national, with some growth in nanotechnology information exchange, harmonization, and standards setting at supranational and international levels (Murashov and Howard, 2011), including activity by the OECD through its Working Parties on Nanotechnology (OECD 2011a) and on Manufactured Nanomaterials (OECD, 2012b). Arguably, some best practices are emerging (IRGC, 2007), but there remain significant differences by countries in the governance and regulation of nanotechnology. There are variations in the overall approaches to, and investment in, the assessment of environmental, health, safety, ethical, legal, and societal implications of

    With history, one must begin with the past. Of course, like most things, nanotechnology was just an idea or concept; a concept that was proposed by the physicist Richard Feynman in 1959. He stated that he wanted to build tiny factories all manufacturing simultaneously. He continued to say that it does not violate any laws of physics and has not been in practice only because humans are too big. The practice of it began to develop when the scanning tunneling microscope was created. This enormous microscope allowed humans to view the height of individual atoms. What was seen looked like some alien landscapes. However, using the same machine, they could also move, pick up, and place the atoms, rearranging these landscapes into their own. Nanotechnology is starting to skyrocket these days. It is one of the major studies right now. Many products are already using nanotechnology. These products are batteries that have longer life spans, sunscreen that doesn’t whiten the user’s face and bandages that kill bacteria. But what will there be in the future? There are chances that the uses of nanotechnology in The Risen Empire can become real. There may be nanosuits and nanoships, but most likely not until the distant future.     One solution to solving the world’s energy policy could be to invest more government spending into nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is manipulating an atom down to its molecular scale in order to change its complexion. An example of nanotechnology is Thermocells, which have been introduced by using carbon nanotube technology, and can provide up to three times the amount of energy than a normal cell. Thermocells look and feel like a standard cell phone battery but instead of the battery continuously running out of energy and needing recharging it constantly generates electricity so there is no need for recharging. Another example of nanotechnology is in the field of solar energy. The very best solar cells existing today only absorb about forty percent of the suns rays while commercially available cells only absorb about twenty percent of the suns rays. With increased research scientists can find out more on bandgaps or energy gaps, which in a solid state have a lack of electrons. If we can utilize bandgaps then we can change the structure of the solar panels causing them to absorb more sunlight. In 2005 the University of Toronto introduced a spray on solar collector that using nanoparticles can change the complexity of the spray to cause whatever it is applied upon to transform it into a solar collector (Water Scarcity). Nanotechnology is also being used in everyday things such as stain resistant clothes, bacterial detectors in food such as corn, and shorts with built in sunscreen.…
