Land Of Canaan Research Paper
The land known as Canaan is important to the history of Judaism and Jewish culture because Jews have considered it their homeland since God promised it to them directly. Ever since that time, the Jewish people have lived in Canaan despite its harsh environment.
God twice promised Canaan to the Jews through Abraham, the father of Judaism. In Genesis Chapter 12, God commanded Abraham to travel to Canaan and told him “To your offspring I will give this land.” (Genesis 12:7). Then in Genesis Chapter 17, God reveals Godself to Abraham again and says: “And I will give you, and to your offspring after you, the land where you are now alien, all the land of Canaan for a perpetual holding; and I will be their God” (Genesis 17:8). Acting on God’s covenant, Abraham led his people to Canaan in 1800 BC. (HistoryText 3.5). They left Canaan for Egypt in 1650 BC, but after the death of Moses, they went back to Canaan. Despite the harsh geological features of Canaan, the Israelites still lived there because this was the land that God promised to them. “Canaan combined largely harsh features such as arid desert, rocky wilderness, grassy hills, and the dry, hot valley of the Jordan River. Water was never plentiful; even the numerous limestone formations soaked up any excess rainfall.” (HistoryText 3.5). This quote shows that Canaan, was not an easy place to live in. Its harsh geological features and vital scarce essential components to life made is hard to live on; and yet, the Israelites still lived there. This was how important Canaan was to the Israelites.
The Jews built their kingdom and holy temple in Canaan (HistoryText 3.5). This shows how much Canaan means to the Jewish people. They built one of, if not the most holy places in Judaism in the land of Canaan.
