Land Controversy

Deciding the best use of land is sometimes complicated and controversial. There are usually at least two sides to the land controversy and these usually include someone trying to preserve the land and the other group trying to build or use the land for something that is not sustainable. A land controversy involving the Broadmoor Hotel and the city of Colorado Springs has been brewing for the past two years. The controversy centers around 189 acres known as Strawberry Fields. The parcel consists of beautiful, rugged, forested land acquired through a public vote in 1885.

The land will be changed completely. When turned into a tourist attraction it will create an increased number of people in that area. Who in some cases may not care for the environment in the way that they should. If it is a tourist attraction gift centers, bathrooms, parking lots and paths will be put in. That becomes destructive to Strawberry Hill. The hotel plans to build a “boutique” horse-riding stable operation with riding trails and a developed picnic area for people to rent out. Putting horse on the land would affect what other types of animals live there and plants that live there. If the city was to get more land there is the question would they be able to take care of more land if they weren’t able to take care of less land in the past. The city was not able to maintain this land and I imagine they would not do much better with more land. Another reason I do not think this should have been given up is because the Broadmoor just wants to make more money. They already have extensive land so I ask myself, why they could not have a house stable there? If their property is close to the hotel they are able to make more money from renting out a picnic spot and conducting horse. They way that they originally decided to buy the land or not was though the public vote I believe that they should have given it back to the public to decide. Land controversy will always be fought over as our world is developing. I think that it is important that people work together for a common goal to protect and preserve land for future generations.
