Essay The Scarlet Ibis
Introduction
One of the saddest and the most beautiful stories that I’ve ever read is The Scarlet Ibis. It is so sad and so beautiful at the same time it makes you want to put the book down and never pick it up again but you can’t because it is so beautiful and touching and it relates to how so many people feel, when they are embarrassed or lose a loved one. The author James Hurst, who grew up in North Carolina, where the story takes place had many experiences with some of the same things that he talks about in his story. The Scarlet Ibis the title of the story relates to two things the bird and to Doodle. The narrator is reminded of the bird at the end of the story when Doodle dies. James Hurst says that the Scarlet Ibis is a symbol of courage and perseverance which defines Doodle’s character quite well. There are many symbols in the story that hint what’s going to happen like in the first couple of paragraphs talk of life and death such as “It was the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born.” And, “The last graveyard flowers were blooming , and their smell drifted across the cotton field and through every room of our house, speaking softly the names of our dead,” this suggests right away that the story is about life and death.

Doodle is very phesecly handicapped.When he was born everybody thought he was going to die but he didn’t. He would always haft to be carful to not overexert him and stay out of direct sun .He had as the doctor called it a “weak heart”. “He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red and shriveled”.
