Lady Macbeth Runs The World Who runs the world ? Girls ! Lady Macbeth to be exact . William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth tells the tale of Macbeth and his lady and their struggles to be upon the throne. Lady Macbeths ambition is the drive of the play. Lady Macbeth had an obsession to rule which caused problems in her marriage , serious consequences for her country and ultimately led to her death. Lady Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s frightening female characters. She is stronger, more ruthless, and more ambitious than her husband. She seems fully aware of this and knows that she will have to push Macbeth into committing murder. She wishes that she were not a woman so that she could do it herself. Shakespeare seems to use her to undercut Macbeth’s idea that “undaunted mettle should compose / Nothing but males” (1.7.73–74).This quote is important because
“unsex me here / . . . / . . . Come to my woman’s breasts, / And take my milk for gall,” Lady Macbeth says as she prepares herself to commit murder. Lady Macbeth is clearly willing to do whatever is necessary to seize the throne. Her strength of purpose is contrasted with her husband’s tendency to waver. In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, one character that I found particularly thought provoking was Lady Macbeth. Initially, she is manipulative and dominant in her relationship with Macbeth and she goads him into committing regicide but by the end she is powerless, desolate and stricken with guilt.
