Labor
Labor relations and labor-management relations are terms used to define the business activities between labor unions and employers. Large organizations employ labor relations or employee relations specialists who operate as a liaison between labor and management. In smaller organizations a human resources manager knowledgeable about labor and employment law handles labor relations matters. Labor relations activities may include contract negotiations, employee grievances, arbitration and mediation.

Every organization has a human resources department. The human resources department specializes in different areas including labor relations. Labor relations staff plays an integral part in the day-to-day operation for both employee and management issues. Small and large organizations may differ on the amount of labor relations specialists however it is essential that qualified personnel are available to advise management, liaison with unions, and assist employees on various aspects of labor relations. For instance, The Auto Club Group, generally known as AAA of Michigan is comprised of a Human Resource Department. The Human Resource Department is comprised of several other departments which include Payroll, Staffing, Learning and Development and Employee/Labor Relations. The Employee/Labor Relations Department is comprised of a Director, Labor/Employee Relations Manager, two Senior Labor/Employee Relations Specialists, four Labor/Employee Relations Specialists, one Executive Secretary and Legal Counsel. This department supports a workforce of more than 2,500 employees (Auto Club Group, 2014 p. 32). These labor relations specialists are experienced technical experts and provide an array of services to one of the largest insurance companies in Michigan. While, AAA is a non-union environment employees, and policymakers are affected by the major processes of labor/employee relations. The Employee Relations department within AAA handles FML, payroll disputes, staffing,
