Label It! Honesty should be the first thing that comes to mind no matter what the situation is. In today’s world, trust has almost completely vanished from everyday life, and if people can’t trust the companies who are regulating our food, and those companies are regulated and controlled by the government, then it seems that no one is trustworthy. Americans have only but a small amount of trust for their government to begin with, and this amount will only get smaller if the US government continues to undermine their citizens. There are very few defenses one can develop that go along with not fully labeling foods that citizens spend their hard-earned money on. A story that was published on Scientific American presents the idea that it is unnecessary for GMOs to be labeled. Throughout their writing, claims are made that would stand against people who believe GMOs should be labeled. They do make some valid points though, especially when explaining how GMOs help plants survive in conditions that they previously would dwindle in. Maybe these points would suffice in a debate over whether GMOs are beneficial or not, but, are these points truly needed when discussing the labeling of GMOs

Imagine this, you are eating a bag of chips. No one ever stops to think what was used to make that bag of chips. Of course potatoes are the main ingredient, but there are so many more additives that are used before that bag of chips reaches the sales floor, and eventually, your hand. In fact, potato chips contain two cancer-causing materials; Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydrozyttoluene BHT. They are used to keep oils in foods from oxidizing and becoming rancid. Oxidation affects the flavor, color, and odor of foods and also reduces some nutrients (Berkley Wellness). These chemicals are oxidants, when in the human body; they turn into cancer-causing reactive compounds. Potato chips aren’t the only foods that contain these

    Table 1 and Graph 1 show that only 40% of the fruit and vegetables only contained chemical preservatives. One of the items of food was banana chips, this product contains Sulphur Dioxide. According to H.A. Steinman, M le Roux and P.C. Potter, Sulphur Dioxide enhances a persons asthma. Only 4 items from the table contained preservatives whereas 6 did not. Not many fruits and vegetables contain preservatives simply because they come from nature. One of the items contained Sodium Benzoate, a small percentage of people are extremely sensitive to sodium benzoate and can experience asthmatic attacks and other allergic reactions when they take in the preservative. A more normal problem is the combination of sodium benzoate and citric acid and ascorbic acid.     “All we want is a simple label for the food that's on our table”. This quote was spoken from a marcher who demands gmos to be labeled for our safety. Gmos are man made plants that still possess unknown effects to our health. In a recent article entitled “labels for gmos foods are a bad idea ” directly oppose people questioning gmos and believing gmos are hazardous. The article tries to persuade the reader into giving a second thought on gmos and think maybe their not so dangerous.     Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)/Genetically Engineered (GE) foods are the result of laboratory processes which artificially insert genes into the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of food crops or animals. There are many arguments both in favor of and against mandatory labeling of GMO/GE foods. Whether or not to require labeling of GMOs or GE foods also involves the debate over the risks and benefits of food crops produced using biotechnology. However, the overarching argument is consumers have a right to know what is in their food, especially concerning products that can cause allergic reactions. According to the Campaign for Healthier Eating in America, Genetically Modified (GM) foods are linked to toxic and allergic reactions, sick, sterile, and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals (http://www.responsibletechnology.org). Because there is no scientific evidence that GMO/GE foods do or do not cause health issues in humans (because there have been no long-term studies), consumers may or may not be being harmed by GMOs. However, the safety of GMOs has been questioned by other countries. In fact, they are banned by food manufacturers in Europe and other countries, but, present in the majority of meats, produce, diary and processed foods in the United States (US). Many consumers in the US have no knowledge that they are consuming GMOs. If they did, it is now known if, similar to Europe, many would prefer to not consume GMO/GE foods. However, without proper labeling, the big issue of concern is, they do not know how to avoid them if they wanted to.…

    Making labeling mandatory on GMO products would help to inform the consumer of what they are purchasing which after all is a right to know what is in the food they are consuming. Consumers Choice Counsel stated that if GMO food is beneficial, then the producers should be willing to have it labeled (Gay).     The FDA (the Food and Drug Administration who is responsible for our safety over food supply cosmetics and other products) does not require any labeling of genetically modified foods.     Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are synthetic antioxidants which are applied in fatty food to prevent oxidative deterioration. (Addis 1986) However, the use of these antioxidants at a high dosage can lead to health problem.
