Lab Week 1 Assignment
1.If the inclination angle is zero, how does the path of the Sun in the sky change as the planet moves from the right side of its orbit to the left?
What is the longest duration (in hours) of sunlit time during the year? What is the shortest duration of sunlit time? How does the angle of sunlight striking the ground change? What is the change in average temperature?

The path of the Sun in the sky doesn’t change as the planet moves from the right side of its orbit to the left. The longest and shortest duration of sunlit time is 12 hours. The angle of the sunlight doesn’t change on the ground. The average temperature stays the same with warm climate throughout the year.

2.Modify the inclination angle to 23 degrees and watch for a complete revolution. What is the length of the longest and shortest duration of sunlit times now? How does the angle of sunlight striking the ground change?
What is the change in average temperature now?

The length of the longest sunlit time is approx. 15 hours and the shortest is approx. 9 hours. The angle of sunlight changes during the winter and summer months.

3.Modify the inclination angle to 60 degrees. Watch the position of the Sun and the brightness of the sky over the landscape carefully. What are the longest and shortest duration of sunlit time now? What is the change in average temperature over the course of a year?

The longest period of sunlight that lasts for more than 24hrs is when the inclination angle is about 60 degrees with the shortest time of sunlight being zero hours. The average change of temperature from winter to summer is greater than that of a 23 degree tilt.

4. What is the smallest inclination angle which leads to a 24-hour period without sunlight?

At 45 degrees, this is the smallest inclination angle that leads to 24hrs of night.

5. The planet Uranus is tilted nearly on its side, so that its axis of rotation is only
8 degrees away from its orbital plane. If you

Direct and indirect sunlight are a result of Earth's tilt on it’s axis. When sunlight hits an object directly it is heated at a greater rate because it receiving more energy per unit affected. If the same object receives indirect sunlight it will heat at a lower rate because there is less energy per unit affected. In the summer, the sun is above the horizon longer than in the winter, because it is receiving more direct sunlight. The hemisphere experiencing summer will be warmer because it receives more direct sunlight for longer. Whereas the hemisphere experiencing winter will be cooler because it receiving less indirect sunlight. Direct and indirect sunlight are an important factor in why we experience the…

There are some problems with sun clocks. For example they only work if it is daytime and the sun is not obstructed by anything, like a cloud. If one did not account for the change of season then the clock would only be accurate in the season that it was made. The main problem was that it was not very accurate. It was just about enough accurate to estimate time to within plus or minus 1 hour during daytime.…

The Sun's yearly path around the celestial sphere, or, equivalently, the plane of Earth's orbit around the Sun, is called the ecliptic. Because Earth's axis is inclined to the ecliptic plane, we experienceseasons, depending on which hemisphere (Northern or Southern) happens to be "tipped" toward the Sun. At the summer solstice, the Sun is highest in the sky, and the length of the day is greatest. At the winter solstice, the Sun is lowest, and the day is shortest. At the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, Earth's rotation axis is perpendicular to the line joining Earth to the Sun, and so day and night are of equal length. The interval of time from one vernal equinox to the next is one tropical year.…
