Lab: Solubility Curve For Potassium Nitrate
Lab – Solubility Curve for Potassium Nitrate

I. Purpose:

To plot a solubility curve for potassium nitrate in aqueous solution.

II. Safety:

Wear eye protection throughout the experiment. Be cautious of hot water. Wash hands if you come into contact with potassium nitrate.

III. Procedure:

1. Carefully weigh out your assigned mass of potassium nitrate on a piece of weigh paper. Carefully pour the sample into the large test tube.

2. Add 20. mL of distilled water to the tube. This water has a mass of 20.

3. Half-fill the beaker with tap water. Place the test tube into the beaker of water. Warm the beaker and stir the contents of the tube with your thermometer. Continue until the solid has dissolved.

4. Remove the test tube from the beaker

Carefully pour the potassium nitrate solution down the sink with plenty of water and clean your equipment.

6. Add your results to the class data and record the class data in the chart.

7. Copy the following chart into the data and observations section of your lab report.

IV. Data

g of KNO3 in 100 grams of water

Temperature (Celsius)

V. Post lab questions

Postlab Questions
1. Describe the graph. How does solubility change with temperature?

As Temperature increases the solubility increases.

2. What is the solubility of potassium nitrate at 50 degrees Celsius?

85 grams

3. At what temperature is the solubility of potassium nitrate 65 g per 100 g of water?

39 degrees Celsius

4. How much potassium nitrate would dissolve in 50 g of water at 60 degrees celsius?

52 grams

5. What is the solubility of potassium nitrate at
a. 70 degrees Celsius?

134 grams b. 40 degrees Celsius?

70 grams 6. If a saturated solution of potassium nitrate in 25 g of water is cooled from 70 degrees to 40 degrees Celsius, what mass of potassium nitrate will crystallize out?

(134/4) - (70/4) = 16 grams
