C. Empirical Relationship of Pressure and Temperature

Procedure: 1) Prepare an empty 100mL flask and enclose it with a rubber stopper. 2) Place the flask in a 200mL beaker half-filled with water. 3) Set up the LabQuest instrument, connecting the pressure and temperature probes. 4) Insert the temperature probe into the water and the pressure probe into the flask through the small hope opening in the rubber stopper. 5) Place the whole apparatus on top of a hot plate and start the LabQuest instrument to start measuring the initial temperature and pressure. 6) Begin to turn up the heat of the hot plate,

    To perform this lab, an apparatus must be set up. To assemble the experimental set up, after acquiring the needed materials, the first step is to fill the tub with room temperature water. After that, room temperature water must also be added to the leveling bulb until the buret and the rubber tubing connecting the buret to the leveling bulb are filled. When filling up the leveling bulb, it must be placed near the top of the buret and should not be no more than half full, filled with water. Bubbles must be cleared from the tubing to eliminate possible errors. Once bubbles are cleared, the top of the buret must be connected to a 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask with a rubber tube and stopper and then must be checked for leaks by lowering the leveling bulb. This should now complete the set up for the lab experiment.…

    First we need to change the data collection to events with entry and change the name to Volume and the units to mL. After that connect the temperature probe to the LabQuest and select new from the file menu. Now that you have the LabQuest ready you need to assemble the Erlenmeyer flask with the rubber stopper (make sure it’s tight). Now set up large containers of water baths from ice water to hot. Use a large volumetric beaker so that way the Erlenmeyer flask fit inside. After that change the graph settings to display graph of pressure vs. temperature.
