1.0 Abstract /summary
The purpose of this experiment to carry out in the lab is because to determined the capability to water droplet to carry out the liquid-liquid extraction. The studies is to determine the average time travel for each of the 10 out of 50 water droplets from top of the burette and to the bottom, the average volume of each of the water droplet and the volume of NaOH needed to neutralise the benzoic acid in aqueous solution. From the volume collected for 50 droplets surface area and radius is calculated for a droplet. The uses of the surfaces area and volume help to determined the concentration of benzoic acid in kerosene, mole of benzoic acid transferred, molar flux and mass transfer coefficient.

2.0 Theoretical background
The background of these studies is to estimate and understand the extraction of benzoic acid in kerosene into carrier medium water. The water droplets are added top of the burette containing kerosene with saturated benzoic acid. Each of the water droplet added is to passes through the kerosene the surface area of the droplet is play an important role for benzoic extraction. The molar flux of benzoic acid through the interface, NB (mol/m2.s) is given by: NB = KC (C*B – CB) where C*B is the concentration of benzoic acid in kerosene at saturation, CB is the concentration of benzoic acid in the aqueous phase and KC is the mass transfer coefficient. In order to determine KC the values of NB, C*B and CB must first be known. this studies will help us to defined how the differences in mass transfer surface area will affect the molar flux and mass transfer coefficient.
The burette was filled with kerosene saturated with

Approximately ten minutes into the reflux period a condensation reflux ring was visible near the top of the round-bottom flask and then progressed up the approximately one-third of the condenser column length approximately twenty minutes into the reflux. Thirty minutes into the reflux, the mixture changed to a dark purple color while it bubbled and boiled. This color remained through the extractions but was left in the boiling flask during distillation. Reflux continued for a total of 60 minutes after the reflux ring formed and took approximately ten minutes to cool down to room temperature. Then the room temperature mixture was prepared for extraction with 10mL of water but discovered to be still very acidic after one wash. To reach a neutral pH, it took three washes with Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3) to remove any excess acetic acid and catalytic sulfuric acid. During distillation, the first drop was observed at 135 C and stopped at approximately 139 C when the distilling flask approached dryness. The final product was clear and colorless with a strong scent of bananas. The mass of the product was a 4.42g…

In this experiment, methyl-m-nitrobenzoate, followed the electrophilic addition of aromatic ring, would be formed from the starting material methyl benzoate and nitric acid, under the catalysis of concentrated sulfuric acid. The reaction between nitric acid and sulfuric acid resulted in the formation of nitronium ion NO2+. It then acted as strong electrophile that nitrated the benzene ring. After that, vacuum filtration and recrystallization were methods used to obtain the final product with minimal impurities. The mass of product…

A pipette was used to place consistent drops of liquid into a 10 ml graduated cylinder until it was filled to the 10 ml mark. The level was measured at the meniscus, bottom of the curve, of the liquid and the amount of drops was recorded. Dividing the volume (10 ml) by the amount of drops yields the volume of a single drop. This procedure was completed three times with three separate liquids; water, water with detergent and rubbing alcohol. Data from the three trials is listed below. The accuracy of the procedure is dependent on consistent drops.…

While the water was boiling with the table salt, sand, and benzoic acid, the water got thick. It was difficult to separate the solids because they would get stuck to the bottom of the Styrofoam cup. In order to separate the iron filings a magnet was used. The solution first needed to be spread out on a piece of paper. As the magnet was ran over the solution, the iron filings were picked up. It took several tries to get all of the iron picked up. To separate the sand, the burner and distilled water was used. As it boiled, it had to be stirred to make sure it was completely dissolved. Having done this twice ensures that the salt and the benzoic acid are completely removed from the sand. An ice bed was necessary to observe the benzoic acid crystallizing. The ice bed allowed the burning benzoic acid to cool down and change appearance and texture. The sand had to be over low heat to be completely dry. No sand splattered which made it effective for the data. To separate the benzoic acid, filtration was used. The mass of the filter paper was 1.1 grams. The ice bath was…

The Simple and Fractional distillation experiment was divided into two parts. We split up the procedure in this experiment. My group did the simple distillation and we received the Fractional distillation from another group in class. In this experiment, we examined the effectiveness of fractional and simple distillation to determine which is more successful at extracting a pure sample. This experiment was very successful. We are able to determine the success of the experiment but calculating refractive index of both types of distillation.…

The purpose of this experiment was to isolate the aromatic hydroxyl compound, eugenol from crushed cloves using steam distillation. After conducting the distillation, the expected two layers were not visible in the centrifuge tube. Subsequently, the extraction and evaporation did not produce the expected oil. This result is probably due to the collection of only water vapor during distillation.…

Two boiling chips are added into the flat bottom flask and weighed. Then, hexane is poured into the flat bottom flask until it is half full. Teflon tape is applied on the bottom end of siphon and condenser before fitting the apparatus. This is to prevent the released of hexane gas during the experiment. The wrapped adsorbent is then placed inside the thimble before putting it over the soxhlet extractor for extraction. Vertical condenser is the connected on the upper under of the soxhlet extractor. Two water pipes are connected on the entrance and exit of the condenser for the purpose of cooling the condensate. The flow rate of water must be adjusted until a smooth flow is seen which adversely means no bubble is suspected over the condenser tube. Hexane is then heated up to the temperature of 200 °C for 6 hours or until all the oil has been extracted. After that, the slurry (oil+ hexane) is dried in the oven at 105 °C for an hour to…
