SUMMARY Testicular tumors are the second most frequently observed malignancy after leukemia in the age group of 20-35 in men. The rate of a 5-year survey is 99.9% with early diagnosis. Awareness of the individuals and performing a testicular self examination by themselves are important in the early diagnosis. Our aim in this cross-sectional study was to determine the performance frequency of testicular self examination and the factors affecting this among young adults. Of all the participants, 23.3%, 6.8% and 4.7% declared that they had heard about testicular cancer and about testicular self examination, and that they had performed testicular self examination at least once in their life, respectively. The rates of hearing about and performing testicular self examination were found low in the present study, however these rates were higher among those who had heard of testicular cancer from population. Well planned campaigns and educational organizations may be conducted in the country-wide in order to increase the awareness about testicular cancer and the frequency of testicular self examination. Key words: Soldier, testicular cancer, testicular self-examination, young adult man ÖZET Genç erişkin erkeklerde kendi kendine testis muayenesi yapma sıklığının araştırılması Testis tümörleri 20-35 yaş grubu erkeklerde lösemiden sonra en sık rastlanan 2. malignitedir.

Who was Alfred Kinsey and what was his work? “Alfred Kinsey (1894 – 1956) was an American biologist, professor of entomology and zoology, and sexologist who in 1947 founded the Institute for Sex Research at Indiana University”[1]. He contributed greatly to the field of entomology with his research on gall wasps. He noticed a great degree of variation in the gall wasps’ mating practices and wondered if human mating practices showed similar variation. Dr. Kinsey published two books about his research, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953). He was on the cover of Time magazine August 24, 1953[1]. The first book was a surprise best seller. The second was an internationally anticipated media event. The media frenzy for Dr. Kinsey’s second book was so intense that he decided to invite only 60 international magazine and newspaper writers to several four day sessions. The writers were required to sign a contract limiting their stories to 5000 words or less. The stories were to be fact checked by Kinsey and his staff.. No photographs were to be taken and only photographs purchased from Kinsey were to be used in the publications. The media was truly eating from his hand.…

Researchers also found that men who smoked marijuana are doubling their risk of testicular tumors compared with men who passed on grass. In addition, their tumors grow at a more rapid pace than normal as well as being more resilient to fight. She also found that the use of marijuana affects their fertility and general health. As a matter of fact, Cortessis also found that the risk of testicular cancer was much greater among men who smoked less than once a week and for fewer than 10 years (2012). On the other hand, Cortessis found men who used cocaine were actually less likely to develop testicular cancer, which contradicts the use of other drugs leading to testicular cancer (2012). In conclusion, there has been a study done on the usage of marijuana and testicular cancer in 2009, so this is not happening by chance. The article states, “The National Cancer Institute estimates more than 8,500 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2012 and about 360 of them will die from it (Cortessis, 2012). Meanwhile, Cortessis brings up a point that marijuana smoke and how cannabis chemical, tetrahydrocannabinol reduces testosterone and may play be a factor with disrupting the maturity of the testes (2012). In the end, there is still a lot of research…

Secondly, for male cancer patients with fertility plans after chemotherapy or radiation therapy, sperm storage is an efficient and essential procedure. According to current literature, testicular cancer accounts for 26.1% of all cancers diagnosed in men aged 20–24 years and Hodgkin’s disease accounts for an additional 15.2% of cancers in the same age group (1). Advances in chemotherapy have greatly improved the cure rate of these malignancies: the 5-year survival rate for testicular cancer is 95% and that of Hodgkin’s disease is 80% (2, 3). The malignancy itself (especially testicular cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and leukemia) impairs spermatogenesis. Chemoradiotherapy is potentially gonadotoxic because the germinal epithelium of the testis is…

In a presumptive test you can conduct an Acid Phosphatase test, which can help in detecting the presence of semen. However this test called “presumptive” for a reason; there are many factors that can alter or contaminate the evidence and therefore falsify the test’s accuracy on the suspected sample. The Acid Phosphatase test can also yield false results because of the test’s high sensitivity. Consequently it can easily be altered by the activity of the enzyme, Acid Phosphatase, the age of the stain, the type of environmental conditions that the sample was and is exposed to, and the presence of vaginal secretions and other bodily fluids. Vaginal secretions can alter the test’s accuracy for semen because it contains, however small, certain amounts of the enzyme, Acid Phosphatase. There are other types of bodily fluids that can alter the test’s accuracy too, but the contamination done by most of these other bodily fluids is miniscule and usually does not alter or contaminate the sample enough to yield false results. There is another type of test called the light test, which uses specialized lights in order to reveal the presence of semen. This test is considered to be “quick” and “easy” because it is useful with preserving both time and money when determining semen’s presence in a suspected area. However, there are many other types of molecules that fluoresce in ways similar to semen; therefore it can be difficult sometimes to determine that a sample really is semen or some other type of molecule. There is another type of test that is used when trying to confirm that a suspected sample really is semen called the Prostate Specific Antigen test. This test can help to aid in the determining of the presence of the prostate specific antigen, (PSA) which is found in the male prostate…

Breast and cervical cancer are the most common causes of cancer mortality among women worldwide, but they are largely preventable. There are limited data on knowledge and practices on screening methods of breast and cervical cancers among female health care workers in Sri Lanka, in spite of having an organized screening programme islandwide. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 219 female health care workers including public health midwives (68.9%) selected from 6 districts in Sri Lanka using convenient sampling methods. A self-administered questionnaire was used as a pre-test in a capacity building training programme to collect the data. The mean (SD) duration of work experience of the respondents was 12 years and 52.5% were aged over 35 years. Most (76.7%) were married, and afamily history of cancer was reported by 24.2%. Over 98% knew about self breast examination. Even though 84.1% practiced it, only 47.9% practiced it on a monthly basis. Clinical breast examination and mammography were known by 94.1% and 64.3% respectively. Only 19.2% had undergone a clinical braest examination within one year and 3.6% had ever undergone a mamography. Only 76.3% knew that a Pap smear detects precancerous stage of cervical cancer. Among 169 married workers, 73.4% had never had a Pap smear and only 17.2% had got it done within the preceding 5 years. Among the reasons for not doing a pap smear within 5 years, 47.0% belived it as not nescessary, 17.3% due to fear/dislike, 23.2% as not having symptoms, 3% had not known about it and 3% not known about availability of services. The study findings suggest that the…
