Warriors: Knights VS Samurai:
Introduction:
For this ‘Japan Under the Shoguns’ assessment task, I have chosen Warriors: Knights VS Samurais. A knight is a mounted warrior of the feudal system of Europe. A samurai is a member of a powerful military caste in feudal Japan, especially a member of the class of military retainers of the daimyos.

Roles and responsibilities:
Knights had the responsibilities of fighting in the king’s army and leading troops of soldiers to war. Not only those responsibilities but knights also had to manage the peasants who were taking care of the farm and also to stopping the fights that might breakout. Knights had to do these for monarch or the king.
While samurais had the responsibilities of obeying their lord/daimyo, had the rights to speak out on bad judgments or orders and lawbreakers must not be hidden in any domain. Samurai had a bigger responsibility than knights where samurais must be ready to die at any time. Samurais had to do all of these for the daimyo.
Lifestyle:

Knights
Samurais
Code of honour
A knight had to follow the code of chivalry. Knights was expected to have the strengths and skills to face in the violent Middle Ages and was also expected to temper his aggressive side of a knight with a chivalrous side to his nature.
A true samurai had to follow the warrior code of bushido. Under bushido samurais had to be loyal to the daimyo, expected to defend to the death and learn several martial arts. These martial arts are: archery, the spear, fencing, horse riding, military strategy, use of firearms and techniques of jujutsu.
Weaponry
Knights had like a mace, battle-axe, spears and many more in terms of weaponry. Knights would use any weaponry, which is good to kill and carry.
Samurais had a type of sword named a Katana. These swords were the samurais to look after these swords, as it was their life and honour.
Armour
Knights had chain mail armour as their armour.
Samurais had short-sleeved kimonos, billowing

The first way that samurais have an advantage is by their armor. In document D written by Terry Bennett it says “ A knight’s armor could weigh 40 to 60 pounds.” This made it harder for the to be able to move around in. The weight would slow the knights down. This gave the samurai’s an advantage to be able to hurt the enemies way faster. Another piece of evidence that supports the claim is in Document D written by Terry Bennett it says how the samurai’s did not wear armor on their right arm so that they could easily draw their bow. This helped them out because if someone was coming at him unexpectedly they would have the time to draw their bow. Since they didn’t have armor on their right arm they would be able to draw it faster and attack back. Therefore, others may think it is an disadvantage but it is not due to how quickly the samurai would be able to pull out the bow and defend their self. This would be one out of so many reasons why the samurai would beat the knights in a battle.…

The first way that Samurai's have an advantage is because of their weapons. In a video made by Terry Schappert, t says that the sword called the Katana has a very good grip and it is mainly used to cut and slice. This is a good thing because the handle is made out of sting ray skin, so it has a leathery structure. Since it is used for cutting and slicing, it would be easy to use in battle. Another piece of evidence that supports the claim is in document D written by Terry Bennett. it says "The body of the armor had four parts. Samurai did not wear armor on their right arm so they could easily draw their bow." They don't have armor on their right arm, so it might be easier to shoot with their arrow. But the bad part is that if the armor gets wet, it becomes very very heavy.…

Samurai lived by the code of Bushido, which emphasized on the rule that they should respect and honor those above them on the social class. And they should obey all the commanders. On the contrary, the reality is a large percentage of samurai become jobless and homeless at the end of Tokugawa Era. Less of governmental offices can provide them occupations as the long period of peace for 200 years. So without war, the samurai’s role and life style dramatically changed since there was no more…

In document E written By Yamaga Soko it says Outwardly he stands in Physical readiness for any call to service and inwardly he strives to fulfill the Way.” Samurais were physically and mentally ready. Samurais would be calm, but when they were called to fight, they were ready and would fight till the end. Another piece that shows that Samurais OR Knights could win is in document E also but written by Sir Thomas Malory. It states, ¨...Solemnly promising to do, not wicked deed, to be loyal to the king, to give mercy to those asking it.” Samurais were also loyal to their king(emperor), but knights gave mercy to anybody who was willing to ask for it. Knights were warriors in Europe but when they did not have to kill, they didn´t. They still fought at the best of their…

Samurai didn’t wear armor or any protection on their right arm so they could easily draw their bow without any trouble(Document C). This made it easier for them to kill a knight or anyone who they were in conflict with. This was also very dangerous because, their arm would be vulnerable to anything that it came in contact with which then you would have one less arm. Their armor created a “shell” that provided both mobility and protection(Document C). A knight’s armor was really heavy to move as quickly, but they were very well protected from anything. This “Shell” like armor that the samurai wore made it easier to move and they were also protected. For these reasons that even though a samurai has good protection and great mobility, doesn’t mean he couldn’t…

For six centuries the medieval knight dominated the battlefield and influenced the Western world greatly. The armored, mounted warrior, born in Middle Ages, revolutionized warfare and became the foundation of the new political structure known as feudalism. The Church put the medieval knight to the ultimate test-the First Crusade of 1095. The Church, which Christianized almost all of the knights, gave them a very high status in society, one that was sought after even by kings and princes. In the end, the legendary knights of the Middle Ages were lost in a world in which there was gunpowder, muskets, cannons, national states and so on.…

Both of these warriors kept an oath of loyalty to their lords and to serve them, but samurai and knights had different obligations, codes, and contracts to follow. Samurai's loyalty to their lords were hereditary (Doc B). Meaning that their contract of loyalty to their lord could last many generations in their family. In contrast, the knights contract was not hereditary and only had to be served by the one who promised to (Doc B). This means that the knight’s family or son was not forced to serve their lord and would be able to discontinue the contract once the knight was done serving. Samurai and knights both had different expectations from each other. Samurais were expected to always put their duty first according to their code of Bushido. This included their family and own personal life. Loyalty and service was the focused point in a samurai's life (Doc E). Whereas knights focused on serving and helping everyone out and not just their lord, according to their code of Chivalry. They focused on being loyal to the king, showing mercy to those who need it, being polite and helpful, and doing no wrong (Doc E).…

Samurai were a little higher up than Knights in the feudal social order. In the social order in feudal Japan if you were a Samurai you were a warrior who owed loyalty and military service to Dalmyos for land or regular payment. All of the Samurai plus their family made up about ten percent of Japans population. Now, Knights on the other hand were warriors who owed loyalty and military service to a lord for land. There were about twelve thousand Knights in England and Normany France in the twelfth century. (Documents A, B)…

    Bushido Code Essay

A lot of the bushido was self honour, which meant living and dying with respect. The bushido code was so strict that the samurai that broke the code it would kill themselves to save their honour (even if nobody knew they broke the rules), this was called harakiri. It involved slitting their stomach open and disenbowing their stomach and organs. It was supposed to be extremely painful as punishment for breaking the bushido code (I’ve never tried it though). The word bushido means way of the warrior, bushi meaning way and do meaning warrior. The biggest need for a samurai back then was to have absolute and total respect to the daimyo. The samurai trusted and respected the daimyo so much that after a samurai’s master had been disrespected of killed it was a samurai’s job to hunt down and kill that person. If the samurai's master had been killed, then the samurai was referred to as a ronin, or masterless samurai. The bushido code was lived by samurai until the about the seventeenth…

I will obviously also talk about piety, which remains a crucial component of knighthood, but can be found in all of these aspects, to reinforce them, by fixing a knight's status and legitimacy. First of all, according to medieval sources, knights were the main and only military force, as can be proved by the fact that, for instance, Geoffroi de Charny wrote an entire manual meant to explain to knights how to fight more efficiently.6 Then, the knights were also at the top of the medieval society, as it is explained in the Prose…
