KmnO4 + Oil experiment reaction paper
On what I have seen, the first experiment showed chemical reaction to be more specific, combustion. In the experiment the Potassium permanganate (KmnO4) was used as the oxidant, and obviously oil as the fuel. As the two were mixed they needed to release energy in form of heat, that’s where combustion occurs. I learn that Combustion is the sequence of exothermic chemical reactions between a fuel and an oxidant accompanied by the production of heat and conversion of chemical species. The release of heat can produce light in the form of either glowing or a flame.

I can say the experiment is quite cool but i find no implication at all. Yes, I learned about how the combustion of solid oxidant-fuel but I believe that the experiment’s main goal is to teach us or more likely show us another type of chemical reaction called combustion, so I find no implication for this.

I’m glad that there’s an application for this experiment. The Potassium Permanganate (KmnO4) formerly known as permanganate of potash or Condy's crystals, it is a strong oxidizing agent. It dissolves in water to give intensely pink or purple solutions, the evaporation of which leaves prismatic purplish-black glistening crystals. As an oxidant, potassium permanganate can act as an antiseptic. For example, dilute solutions are used to treat ulcers, disinfectant for the hands and treatment for mild pompholyx, dermatitis, and fungal infections of the hands or feet. Aside from water treatment and disinfectant, I learned that KmnO4 is good for fruit preservation (banana). And oil can be used for cooking.

Based on the information I have come to a conclusion that Potassium Permanganate (oxidant) and oil (fuel) being mixed together results in release of energy and the combination of oxidant and fuel is called combustion, a type of chemical reaction

When a few drops of glycerine are placed in a pile of potassium permanganate, a redox type reaction occurs. This reaction is exothermic (releasing energy). With the glycerine boiling giving off smoke and eventually producing flame that spreads around the pile of potassium permanganate. All the glycerine is going to be consumed by the permanganate. Also in the reaction, both kinds of energy are produced. Light and thermal energy. After all the reactants of this reaction have reached the necessary activation energy, the pile of Potassium permanganate combusts into a very hot flame which is usually exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius. Potassium permanganate oxidizes glycerine in a spontaneous reaction that generates a lot of energy in the forms of heat and light. It is said that items of food contain considerable energy. With appropriate conditions, this energy is released much more rapidly than in our body. That is why this reaction appears so violent to our eyes. The energy is released very rapidly. The two reaction are really similar one to the…

    Tirrill Burn Experiment

The very first experiment had the hypothesis that the temperature of a burner flame can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of gas to air in the mixture to be burned. During this experiment, my partner and I gathered our materials of the paper matches, straight pins, copper wire, laboratory burners, rubber tubing, tongs, and evaporating dish. Making sure we had our safety goggles on and the material we needed, we connected the Tirrill burner into the gas and lit the burner with the match, having the air vents closed and the gas on. When the burner was lit, we noticed that the flame had a luminous, smoky yellow appearance. We then used a pair of tongs to hold the evaporating dish towards the top of the flame for 10 to 20 seconds. We observed…

During the burning period, the flame vaporizes the candle’s wax which yields water and carbon dioxide into the air. This causes the candle to melt slightly and drip down the sides of the candle, which shows a change after the burning period. Also, the whole purpose of the experiment was to increase observational skills and think of ways to perform the experiment with provided tools in the laboratory. Practicing accurate measuring and data collecting skills due to human nature as vision can be be unreliable sometimes.…

I gathered my materials from the material list and set up my data table. I combined the zinc and HCl, then captured the Hydrogen that was produced and observed the combustion reaction with a flame. I then captured more hydrogen to use later in the experiment. I combined manganese with hydrogen peroxide which bubbled much the same as the zinc and HCl to produce oxygen. I observed the reaction of the oxygen with a burning ember. I then captured more oxygen in the bulb with the hydrogen, and observed itʼs reaction of extinguishing the flame. I then produced carbon dioxide in a few different ways. Put lime water in a well, mixed baking soda and vinegar, and observed the limewater turning murky and grey, an indication of CO2. Then did the same with a well of bromothymol blue which indicated an acid. I exposed this gas to a flame and the flame extinguished immediately. I then combined alka-seltzer and water, and inserted the gas into the lime water again. I then tested the CO2 from my breath with the lime water.…
