‘The way I saw it’
Inspired from the book, ‘Kite Runner’ By Khaled Hossein
It’s a hot and stuffy afternoon which didn’t help with the disgusted and hurt feeling I felt inside. I never thought that I would be betrayed by my best friend Amir maybe he was scared of being hurt by Assef- I don’t blame him for being afraid but I wish that he helped me that day. I was hanging up the washing when I heard a voice say, “Come with me.” To my surprise I turned to see Amir and I was so happy to see him, but at the back of my mind I was also curious about what he wanted to show me. I followed him to the hillside where he used to read all his stories to me. He was a talented writer and I enjoyed listening to his stories all the time.
He already made it to the top of the hill, “wait!” I shout desperately trying to catch my breath. I finally reach the top and there is an awkward silence between myself and Amir while we stand there looking at each other. I try to make conversation by asking how his school was and what he was learning. I am always fascinated by what he had learned at school and sometimes it made me wish that I went to school too. It is getting too hot to think of things to say to him, so I think it is best to stay quiet. We then move to sit under the pomegranate tree to cool down.
However the ground is far too hot to sit on and we decide to stand under the tree. We stand there again in silence- not a word was said. I could tell that Amir wanted to say something to me but he didn’t say anything. Maybe he wants to talk about what happened and that he was sorry for abandoning me with Assef. I look up to find him looking around searching for a fresh pomegranate I think he must be thirsty from this hot weather. Finding one he asks, “What would you do if I hit you with this?”
His question stunned me; it is not like him to say this. Maybe it’s a joke or a test to see how loyal I am to him. I’m always loyal to Amir and would never do anything to hurt him. Without saying a word I suddenly started to feel sticky and I look down to see the fresh juices of the fruit covering me. I freeze.
Before I knew it Amir Agah is throwing pomegranates at me one by one. I sense fear and guilt from him which made me upset. He starts to shout at me and telling me to hit him, but I didn’t want to do that. His shouts got louder and I want him to stop because now my top is drenched from the juices. The only way to get him to stop was to do something; I didn’t know what to do. Suddenly the sound of his shouts began to muffle out and I find myself grabbing a fruit from the ground and I press it firmly against my forehead. “Do you feel better now?” I say. I run all the way back home and quickly wash up before my father sees me.
It is nightfall, and I need time to think about what happened. Amir is not himself today it wasn’t like him to act out this way. I decide to sleep it off and hope for a better day tomorrow, because it’s Amir’s birthday.

Amir is very selfish and only does things for his own benefit. He did not have the courage or strength to step in and save his friend in the alley from Assef. He made the choice to betray his friend. As Hassan stood his ground in the alley and chooses to honor his promise to Amir and return the kite to him, Amir stood silent at the end of the alley and watched the beating and rape of his friend Hassan. The following quotation emphasizes how Amir is unworthy of Hassan’s loyalty: “I had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan – the way he’d stood up for me all those time in the past – and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run. In the end, I ran.” (82). Amir’s betrayal continues, as he later decides that he no longer wants Hassan and his father in the household, so he decides to set up Hassan and accuse him of stealing. “I went downstairs, crossed the yard, and entered Ali and Hassan’s living quarters by the loquat tree. I lifted Hassan’s mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of Afghani bills under it.” (110). Amir betrays Hassan by trying to have his friend fired for stealing. From the start and through his death, Hassan remains the same: loyal, forgiving, and good-natured. Hassan grew up with a very particular role in life. The novel centers on the relationship between the narrator Amir and his friend/servant Hassan and Amir’s guilt when he witnesses an act of violence done to Hassan that he fails to intervene in. Amir, is the central character and is shaped both in character and intellect by power. He is privileged and wealthy, but also steeped in jealousy and cowardice. He is selfish and guilty of abhorrent behaviors. The one positive strength Amir has is his friendship with Hassan. Hello Mr.Hosseni. In my English class, we just got finished with your novel The Kite Runner.Your book, has been the best school book I have ever read in English class. I was very surprised of all the information that I learned about the political struggle in Afghanistan, and especially surprised that this was a story of your childhood in Kabul from then on.From your childhood, Kabul seemed to be a very wonderful place. I was fascinated by the fact that instead of supermarkets, you had a bazaar to get all of your groceries.
