In this experiment, we are required to observe, explain, identify and recognize the phylum under Kingdom Animalia. The phylum that we need to identify was Phylum Porifera, Phylum Cnidaria, Phylum platyhelminthes, Phylum Nematoda, Phylum Rotifera, Phylum Mollusca, Phylum Arthropoda, Phylum Echinodermata, Subphylum Cephalochordata and Subphylum Vertebrata (Fishes).
Phylum Porifera
The characteristic of members of Phylum porifera include asymmetrical or radial symmetry body plan. There are three types of cells which is pinacocytes, mesenchyme cells (amoebocytes) and choanocytes. The central cavity or several branching chambers, thru which water flows for filter feeding and the members under Phylum Porifera do not have tissues or organs. The example of animals that are classify under Phylum Porifera is sponge. Sponge cells are specialized for particular functions (division of labor). Pinacocytes are the “skin cells” of sponges. They are thin, leathery and tightly packed together, may be slightly contractile and help sponge change shape. Some pinacocytes specialized into porocytes, which regulate water circulation.
Phylum Cnidaria
Cnidarians include corals, jellies, and hydras. These animals have a diplobastic, radially symmetrical body plan that includes a gastrovascular cavity with a single opening that serves as both mouth and anus. The basic body plan of a cnidarians is a sac with a central digestive compartment, the gastrovascular cavity. There are two variations on this body plan : the sessile body polyp and the motile medusa. Polyps are cylindrical forms that adhere to the substrate by the eboral end of their body (the end opposite the mouth) and extend their tentacles, waiting for prey. A medusa is a flattened, mouth down version of the polyp. It moves freely in flattened, mouth-down version of the polyp. It moves freely in the water by a combination of passive drifting and contractions of its b ell-shaped body. Cnidarians are carnivores that

    There is a diversity of invertebrates in marine life. For instance, the Pelagia Notiluca jellyfish does not have a spine and is also considered a cnidarian (any invertebrate animal distinguished by the particular stinging structures in the tentacles surrounding the mouth). These mushroom shaped bells have eight hair-like marginal pink tentacles that measure up to ten meters in lenth. The average size of the Noctiluca is 6.5 cm diameter across the bell but they may grow to be 10 cm or more. The tentacles, oral arms, exumbrella (the top of the jellyfish), and gastric pouches are covered in cnidocytes, cells that eject a toxin-filled stinging thread. Noctilucas have 16 stomach pouches and 16 lappets, which are overlaps of the exumbrella. The exumbrella is covered with wart-like clusters of stinging nematocysts which is a specialized cell in the tentacles of a jellyfish that has a venomous coiled thread that can be let out in self-defense or to capture a prey. The uxmbrella edge is divided into eight lobes, where sense organs such as light receptors and odor pits are located. The uxmbrella can be bell-shaped or hemispherical, and color can range from purple to brownish-red. Pelagia also have eight marginal sense organs and sixteen marginal lobes. The medusa is filled with an abiotic gel-like substance called the mesoglea. Noctiluca is well-known for its beautiful luminescence. This jellyfish phosphoresces when it is disturbed and can leave a luminous mucous behind if touched which is called the "mauve jelly" by the British. If disturbed, it will bioluminescent, and this luminescence is often seen at night. It is not certain what causes luminescence in the Noctiluca, but it is not caused by cytolosis (disruption of cells) or muscular contraction. The bioluminescence is likely controlled by the nervous system; however no recent work has been done on this particular species to confirm this hypothesis.     Since the radial symmetry body plan has little to no systems, this makes the animals less intelligent than the bilateral symmetry body plan. This means animals with radial symmetry cannot react as well as other animals. This also means the organism cannot, see, taste, smell, or think as well, as bilateral symmetry animals.
