I think King Arthur was real because he appears in writings of a Welsh historian named Nennius and in the Bible.

I think King Arthur was a hero because he won many victories and loved and protected his city.
3. Choose one of the stages of the hero's journey as described in the unit. Describe how the legend of King Arthur illustrates this stage. Write at least one paragraph.
I choose Meeting the Mentor: King Arthur meets his teacher, Merlin, the one who reveals Arthur's destiny to him. He begins to learn many useful skills and lessons and what is to come to his kingdom. He also leads him to the enchanted lake where Arthur receives the mighty Excalibur. Throughout Arthur's journey, Merlin gives him necessary wisdom for his survival.
4. If heroes are a reflection of "who we are as a culture and as people," what does King Arthur reflect? What traits does he show that Western society values?
King Arthur reflects the good. He reflects what the people want in their culture.
I think that is what Western society wants because we all want to be a kind and generous person.
5. What was the "Round Table"? Why is it important to the legend of King Arthur? What did it symbolize?
The “Round Table” symbolized the unity of people. The round table was special place to be. The round table signified completeness, a magic circle and a brotherhood. The symbol is important to King Arthur because a sense of completeness and brotherhood was important to King Arthur.
6. Who was Lancelot? How did he fit into the Arthurian legends?
Sir Lancelot is regarded as the first and greatest of King Arthur's legendary knights. He fit into the legends for that reason, he was the first and the greatest of the other knights.
7. What was the Holy Grail? What role does it play in the King Arthur legends?
The Holy Grail was a cup used at the Last Supper. It was used to collect Christ blood and sweat. The Holy Grail plays in the King Arthur legends because it was one of his greatest accomplishments.
8. Why do you think the King Arthur legends have been so popular throughout history? Explain your response.
I think the legend of King Arthur is so popular because of the Bible, the round table and the Holy Grail. The bible keeps his story alive and passes it down for generations.

In book one, it tells of the beginnings of Arthur and his knights. It starts when Arthur was born to Uther, leader of the Britons, and Igrayne, queen of Cornwall. The reader learns of how Merlin, the enchanter, watched over their love and once Arthur was born, how Merlin carried him by a secret path down a cliff side. Nothing was spoken of his fate. Years went by, until the appointed time was at hand. Then Merlin and the Archbishop called for a gathering of knights on Christmas Day.
