Summary: In Don Thompson’s article entitled “5 Dead, Including Gunman, in Series of North California Shootings” which was published November 14, 2017, it begins with the author defining the unfortunate occurrences of the multiple victims involved in a shooting in Red Bluff, California. It is clarified that the suspected shooter has been shooting “... Hundreds of rounds, large magazines,” a witness reported. Oddly enough, the shooter had also been reported for a domestic violence incident that most of his neighbors were “aware” about. Though the devastating occurrence was one that changed the lives of many Red Bluff citizens, there remains information that is still unknown to the public eye. As Thompson opens his article, he begins to summarize…

Today a trial took place at the small court in Maycomb County, Alabama. A nineteen-and-a-half year old white woman named Mayella Ewell and her father filed a rape charge against a maimed black man.The courtroom was packed to the brim with white and black viewers. The judge, Mr. Taylor, was draped lazily across his chair, looking very well asleep, as the prosecutor drilled first Mr. Tate, the local sheriff, then Mr. Ewell, and finally Mayella. According to the witnesses, the girl asked for Tom Robinson’s help to “bust up a chiffarobe” and when she turned to give him a nickel he sprang on her and beat her and took advantage of her. Mr. Ewell heard her screaming from a nearby field and “came runnin’ fast as I could” and tried to catch Robinson…

In the readings for this week Sara Ahmed discusses how to build a “killjoy survival kit” as well as the significance of a “killjoy manifesto”. The purpose of a killjoy manifesto is to point out what is already present in society. The reason why the burden falls on the feminist is because of the power struggle between the people who built the institutions and are consequently impervious to them and those who want to expose these institution, the feminist killjoy. Throughout this book the author uses the term “killjoy” to describe the sentiment a person feels when they expose barriers, violence and inequality to the people around them. Yet, what struck me the most in this reading was the topic of happiness. A survival kit is necessary because…

The first chapter describes the hassles four people have to go through to get to changsha china. Within the train stations and airports, they are trampled by different people clearly looking to make money off the ignorance of foreigners. The narrator is the main character and his motivation for being there is unclear. He did state the other three people were there to teach English. It is assumed that they are all from the states. Many people in the train station want to take advantage of them and prohibit them to get where they want to go with different regulations and clearly made-up rules. Eventually, they do arrive in changsha and get a warm greeting from people in charge of foreign affairs at the university they are working with. They took a eye opening van ride to the university where they were greeted by top notch university administration. This previous week we watched a film in class called The Execution of Clifford Boggess. In the beginning I believe Clifford Boggess to be a regular individual. Actually Clifford Bogess graduated with honors, was also a talented piano player who played at weddings, and he also went to church faithfully. He was a normal individual that you wouldn’t even expect to commit crimes like these. On June 18th, 1988 a man by the name of Clifford Holt Boggess was born. Clifford Boggess was a lower class Caucasian male. When Boggess committed his first murder he was only twenty one years old. Boggess had been saving money for college until the car that he was driving needed to be replaced. Boggess was an unemployed individual and needed fast cash.…

In chapter 13, the boys are faced with their first battle, and are exceedingly nervous. When they get the order originating from the corporal to take pills, they don’t hesitate to take them, for their superior officer has ordered it. The fact that Beah chooses to utilize the words ‘secretive smile’ illustrates consonance and adds significance, creating a negative or sly connotation. The soldier exploited the higher power of the corporal in order to induce the boys into taking drugs. The control of the drugs assists the boys in battle, making them ‘high’ and aiding them in the slaughter of others. The drug high causes the boys to become oblivious to the sins they are committing, instead focusing on the ebullition of destroying the enemy. Since…

Harry Dresden was going to dinner with Karrin Murphy. A relationship that remained platonic for 12 books even though the characters were in love, and then Dresden gets shot through the chest and falls dead into Lake Michigan (Butcher). 12 years of refusing to act led to inner pain for the pair even after the return of Dresden from the death-like state he was in. Andre Dubus’ Killings is a story of acting on ones feelings, and not waiting for everything to just fix itself. The story constantly is mentioning conflicting aspect of action and inaction, then the idea of acting when you can sets the scene for the resolution, which is shown by Matt, the main character, putting a bullet in the head of his son’s killer. This will be presented by showing one such paradox that is shown in the text, then by showing how action is…

Most people try to avoid issues concerning homosexuality by being neutral even if they have a problem with it. Schools face a bigger problem staying neutral since they must protect students’ rights, as well as maintaining order for the entire school. Chapter 16 starts with the narrator and Chris begins their trek into the mountains. The difficult route reminds the narrator of the philosophical terrain Phaedrus trekked in search of Quality. On this mental journey, Phaedrus becomes frustrated at his inability to define Quality so he turns to a non-metaphysical explanation that revolves around his teachings. Ultimately, Phaedrus realizes that the institutional setting of the university promotes grade-motivated “mules” that were taught to simply reiterate and memorize facts that are likely to hinder what he would call “Quality.” For this reason, Phaedrus decides to challenge the university’s institutional components by withholding the student’s grades for an entire quarter. The purpose of…
