Kill and Island
Day 1
As the small lifeboat is drifting through the sea, the children on board are slowly leaving behind the happy and peaceful life of England and heading towards the hard and cruel challenge to survive. Their thoughts are slowly changing. Happy memories are turning to thoughts of hunting and murder and their tastes for music and games are slipping away. Their rations are limited and already, the look in their eyes is slowly turning from gentle to bloodlust.
This band of 15 children was thrust upon this deserted island. They are no more than 12 or 13 years old and most are much younger than that. There are approximately 8 boys and 7 girls, most are shaken by the sinking of the ship. This is a change to them. They all come from calm lives and now are stuck on this chaotic island, where their minds will slowly deteriorate and the sound of laughter in the playground will be replaced by bloodlust and a thirst for hunting.
They are all unfamiliar with each other. They must find a way to establish rules and government so they can maintain order. But the thoughts of these children are currently wrapped around hunting and survival. They are all strong, brought up on farms and not shy of hard work. Food and Shelter will not be an issue, but their sanity is a huge matter. They must find a way to replicate the gentle government that they came from, or they will go insane, and die on this island.
Day 7
These children have now established a good communication and have managed to find food and shelter. A leader has emerged from the group and they are hoping that they will eventually get rescued. This leader symbolises their hope of getting rescued and they need this if they are to remain sane on this island. When the leader came he had a bell. This bell is a symbol of the civilised existence in which is no longer within their grasp. The bell has done well to drive out savagery, no matter where it may lurk within the hearts of these children.
But already, traces of

The island caused the darkness to arise out of everyone. Plus, the lack of proper authority figures, as in adults, caused much fighting over the theoretical position of complete control over regulations. I would argue that even though the situation was dire, the fact that this unique set of children were the ones stranded on the island, was the cause of these certain events to occur. If there had been older children and no, as the book calls them, littluns, then the events would have unfolded much differently, even though it took place on the same island.…

These boys are terrified by a beast that they think lurks on the island. Piggy makes an observation and says “That little ‘un-” gasped Piggy-” him with the mark on his face, I don’t see him. Where is he now?”(46). After this the boy's fears increase. With this the boys represent Hobbes idea’s on fear which is that “Everyone lives in constant fear. Because of this fear, no one is really free..”. With the constant fear the boys have they don’t know what to do on the island so they do the opposite of what they are told. There is no adult figure there to tell them that there is no beast and there is nothing to fear. This shows how the political system that Ralph had formed was not being supported or followed through by the other boys on the island. Another way the boys didn’t help Ralph was when they would go off and hunt with Jack or when they decided to join Jack’s tribe because he said it would be more fun than staying with Ralph, who they initially deemed chief of the island. The littluns don’t understand that Ralph is the right person to listen to since they don’t understand the consequences of not having shelter, smoke, and water.…

Shivering bodies, small grins and the smell of desperation of wet dog filled the tightly crammed boat. The boys have been on the ship for quite sometime but none of the leftover boys said a word. An english caption was driving the big white ship. Waves hit among the bottom of the boat and Ralph watched each splash bounce off the boat and head deeper into the ocean. Ralph preferred not to come inside, instead he pondered his thoughts and wish he never boarded onto that plane."why couldn't it be someone else" screamed Ralph as he hit the side of the ship. The naval officers were done with curiosity and silence from the boys and so they stood up and called a meeting. One naval officer asked for the names of the leftovers.…

The book indicates that it takes place in the midst of an unspecified nuclear war. Some of the marooned characters are ordinary students, while others arrive as a musical choir under an established leader. Most (with the exception of the choirboys) appear never to have encountered one another before. The book portrays their descent into savagery; left to themselves in a paradisiacal country, far from modern civilisation, the well-educated children regress to a primitive state.…

The group of boys who, once had innocent and pure lives turned into a group of monsters who wreaked havoc against anyone who opposed them. Fear led the boys to make illogical choices and the overall thirst for power and dominance caused them to act uncivilized to one another. After being on the island for so long, the boys became aware that it wasn’t crashing on an island that drove them to savagery, but that it was having to deal with each other that led them to the lifestyle they lived. The deterioration of morality among the boys caused them to act in ways they wouldn’t have if they hadn’t crashed on the island. As a group, the boys were not able to live in peace with each other due to their fear and greediness for control and that soon led to the downfall of their…

The smaller children, or as they were called, the littluns, ran freely, doing as they please, but the older kids had to work until they rebelled that is. Then, they were able to pursue whatever they wished with their time. There was no expectation to look out for the future or to work hard. Also, there were no consequences for their actions. In their new environment, they could break any rules they wanted without having to even consider what could happen.…

When the boys first land on the island they still have their childish innocence. They still remember their English upbringing. They work together to build a civilized community like back in the adult world they have suddenly been separated from. Even though Ralph was chosen leader, Jack agrees there is a need for rules, “ I agree with Ralph. We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We are English, and English are best at everything. So, we’ve got to do the right things.” (38).…
