REPORT WRITING

You are strongly advised to review the guidance on report writing provided by the library. The following is an abridged version taken from the library website “Key Skills” by Claire MacTavish © De Montfort University 27.08.01

How is a report different from an essay?

In purpose:
A report needs to finish with clear recommendations about what action is suggested as a result of the findings. An essay is unlikely to need such an important and emphatic conclusion, (depending on its title).
报告需要写一个明确的建议,关于你的调查

In structure:
A report has headed and numbered sections so that any item in it may be found quickly, and read separately. Information which is not vital to an understanding of the report is included in an appendix at the end.

报告需要写小标题
对于不会对理解文章内容有重要影响的信息可以用附录形式写在文章后面

In style:
A report is written in the third person (avoiding ‘I’, ‘we’ and ‘you’). Its style is direct and brief because it needs to be read quickly. It is written in the passive voice, e.g.

‘The survey was carried out’,

Not:

>‘I carried out the survey’.

An essay, too, is formal and usually written in the third person, but there might be times when a more personal approach is needed.
报告不可以用第一人称,必须用第三人称或被动语态

What is the structure of a report?

Unless you have been given specific instructions, it’s a good idea to follow the generally accepted standard structure. The standard structure has these sections, in this order:

>title page
>summary
> contents page
>introduction
> main body of text (with sections/chapters to suit your material)
>conclusion
>recommendations

Joanna Kathleen Rowling once said, “It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” Rowling’s words suggest it is our decisions that show who we really are more than our capabilities. It’s not about what we can do or how fast we can get it done, but it’s ultimately about the decisions we make to do something or not. Rowling’s words are in fact valid. The choices you make in a difficult situation can fundamentally show the people around you what you’re made of and what you’re about. Evidence of Rowling’s words exist in Ashley Antoinette’s novel Moth to a Flame through the use of characterization and Sidi’s novel Fatou: An African Girl In Harlem also through the use of characterization. Both Antoinette and Sidi’s work show that the decisions we make ultimately show who we truly are.…

Important Note: Looking ahead to the report, pick a topic on which you’re confident you can find information—in print or electronic sources and/or through interviews or surveys. Also choose a topic you are confident you can expand on to meet the length requirement for the report, which will be four pages of text. Overall, you should select your topic carefully because the report & presentation together are worth a substantial number of marks. In addition, you’ll be expending a great deal of time and energy on these projects. The more satisfied you are with your topic, the more satisfied you’re likely to be with your reports. Please refer to the suggested topics at the end of this guideline.…

    Analytical Report

Reports play a significant role in the careers of all business professionals. Reports fall into three basic categories: Informational reports offer data, facts, feedback, and other types of information, without analysis or recommendations. Analytical reports offer both information and analysis, and they can also include recommendations. Proposals (in our next module) offer structured persuasion for internal or external audiences. The nature of these reports varies widely, from one-page trip reports that follow a standard format to detailed business plans and proposals that can run hundreds of pages. No matter what the circumstances, try to view every business report as an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of your audience's challenges and your ability to contribute to your organization's success.…
