Case# 64 Literacy: Reading Language Arts is a second grade Social Studies class. This class contains 23 students that are ages seven and eight. Diversity among the students varies greatly because of linguistic diversities, the range of abilities of the students, and the personalities of the students as a whole. Two students are English Language learners, one student has a diagnosis of Asperger’s, and one student receives services in speech. The teacher uses a Diagnostic Reading Assessment to attain the reading levels of the students within the class. The class scores on the DRA range from Level 4 (fall quarter first grade score) to level 38 (spring quarter third grade score). Using the information from the DRA, she noted four students reading scores fall below the second grade level, six reading scores are on the second grade level, and thirteen reading scores are above the second grade level. The information used for planning the lesson was academic abilities and challenges in attention. Our first discussion in this class revolved around our narrow views on the question “What is literacy?” We answered the question based on how literacy is required in America. It serves as a vehicle for social mobility and is used to determine economic status. Our definition of literacy as reading, writing and comprehension of written texts was shaped by our experiences in our lives and our beliefs about the trappings of illiteracy. An estimated twenty-two million people each year are added to the adult illiterate population in the United States (The Talking Page, 2007). To define the term “literacy” on its own results in an extremely vague and ambiguous meaning. Literacy often used metaphorically to designate basic competencies and many times the definition becomes misinterpreted.
