Kenyon Commencement Speech
Kenyon Commencement Speech David Foster Wallace brings a completely different approach to commencement speeches in his “Kenyon Commencement Speech.” He strays away from the typical commencement speech topics on “extraordinary wealth,” “comfort,” or “personal freedom” (208). Instead Wallace emphasizes the real value of a liberal arts education, which is learning “how to think” (199).
When Wallace mentions “how to think” he is taking a different stance to the idea of education. He doesn’t feel education should revolve around the capacity to think, but rather “what to think about”(199). He is trying to influence his audience to think on a completely different level. He wants people not to see a glass half empty or half full but both. Wallace asks of his audience to think in more ways than one. These other levels of thinking go so much further than wealth, freedom, or comfort. Although these things are nice, they can simply be given to people. For instance, there are many wealthy, free, and comfortable citizens in countries like the United States where some people never think on the level they could. A true education is one that creates a level of thinking and understanding apart from oneself. Wallace emphasizes how people should choose to be conscientious of others, rather than oneself. He wants the audience, who is about to go out into the world and be the change, to stop and think, not of wealth or power, but rather of others. A number of people go though life and choose only to think selfishly of themselves. In the end, what good does this do?
There is a default setting that exists within every human’s mind. Wallace chooses to address the unspoken parts of life including “boredom, routine, and petty frustration” in order to point out the default settings that occur within the mind (203).     “Default Setting” in this is seen as a positive to most, because of this quote. “ And the world will not discourage you from operating on your default-settings, because the world of men and money and power hums along quite nicely on the fuel of fear and contempt and frustration and craving and the worship of self. Our own present culture has harnessed these forces in ways that have yielded extraordinary wealth and comfort and personal freedom.” This quote leads the reader to believe that it is possible to achieve vast wealth through the “Default Setting.” From a faulty perception of Wallace’s use of “Default Setting” the reader believes the setting can help achieve this because you will be acting for yourself, putting “your needs”, “your wants”, and “your goals” ahead of everyone else's, because “you” are at the center of every situation. But really what Wallace wants the reader to see is that actually what is being said is simply just a mockery. Wallace is attacking the “Default Setting” by pointing out that using it in this fashion is greedy and disappointing. From this fragment of the previous quote, “the world will not discourage you” Wallace is trying to hint the reader that nobody will stop “you” from using the “Default setting” only “you” can stop yourself from using it. By leaving the decision up to the reader on whether using the “Default Setting” is the right thing, it allows the reader to deeper analyze the situation and come to the conclusion that using the “Default Setting” to achieve wealth is greedy. It turns the reader to pair “Default Setting” with greed because the reader supposes that if they where to put themselves first in every situation, regardless of the situation then profitability will be close by.     Everyone needs some sort of schooling to be successful in life. In school, students learn to read, write, process thoughts and ideas and apply knowledge to outside situations. No one can argue the point that school and education aren’t necessary, because the thought is absurd. In my opinion though, school had become a competition instead of an education. Students have become so focused on being the best in their class, having a GPA a hundredth of a point higher than their friend, being involved in extra-curricular activities, and obtaining as much knowledge to the point of just memorizing rather than understanding. Believing that an average public school education will give you the knowledge you need to be successful in everything that you do in order to make a living is an incredibly false perception. Schooling gives you an education which sets a foundation for like, but how will you live if you’ve never had to think about living?
