Kennedys Speech In John F. Kennedy’s speech (April 11th, 1962) he states that “Increasing steel prices by some 6 dollars a ton, constitutes a wholly unjustifiable and irresponsible defiance of the public interest.” Kennedy goes on to say and back up the thought that increasing the price of steel per ton will, in the long run. Benefit society. By saying “If this rise in the cost of steel is imitated… it would increase the price of homes, autos, appliances, and most other items for EVERY American family.”, He is convincing the steel companies and the middle class workers that this, is in fact, a good thing. Kennedy does right by addressing society as the president, an authoritative figure with “labels on his back” so to speak. This persuades working class and steel companies to be in favor of the rising price.
1.) Anadiplosis- “..It would increase the price of homes, autos, and appliances..” “It would increase the cost of machinery..” Kennedy is reiterating and emphasizing on the positive side of the rising steel costs so that people will begin to be in its favor.
2.) Anaphora- “In this serious hour in our nation’s history when we are confronted.. When we are devoting our energies… when we are asking reservist to leave there homes for months on end.” Kennedy uses this to place himself among the people. He does this to show that he is also effected by what is going on around him. Kennedy also does this in order to emphasize the ridiculous request that the American people are asking for.
3.) Casoria- “and service men to risk their lives – and four in the last two days of Vietnam – and asking union members to hold down their wage requests.” Kennedy uses this approach to be open and bluntly honest about what’s going on in Vietnam whilst other things are happing in the U.S. It almost seems like he is

As an American, what would you do for your country? United State was recovering from recession, and American soldiers were risking their lives in Vietnam war. However, steel companies were focused on making profit by rising the steel prices. President Kennedy was completely against their decision. He believed in stable prices and wages. After steel companies raised the steel price, President John F. Kennedy held a news conference. He wanted to alert the society about the destruction that could be occurred from increasing the steel prices. In “JFK Steel Speech,” President John F. Kennedy uses ethos, pathos, logos to turn American people’s anger against the nation’s largest steel companies and impel them to lower their steel prices.…

President John F. Kennedy, in his news conference speech to the nation and steel company, appeals to a sense of community sacrifice and responsibility in an effort to establish his outrage of the rise in steel prices after the recession. Kennedy’s purpose is to address how action should be taken to provide the best interest of success for the United States. He adopts a sharp tone and includes very strong, clear diction which appeals to pathos on order to convey a sense of guilt or harshness that the steel companies are doing because of all the sacrifices the Americans have done.…

Kennedy brings up persuasive facts and data about the steel industry, and he proves why they inconsiderate to raise the price. The “cost per ton of steel can be expected to decline”, so why would they need to raise the prices if they are making more steel for the cost of less workers? The “gigantic corporations...decided to increase prices in… disregard of their public responsibilities”, while all Americans pay the penalty. He then makes an allusion to his famous quote from above and the steel companies answer was clearly nothing productive for their own company. He provides much evidence of the flaws of the steel companies; however, he ends with the fact that there will be justice for the freedom Americans deserve.…

Kennedy used such a tone in the news conference so he could persuade the people to give in his words. His tone was persuasive and logical. For example, “ asking union members to hold down their wage requests, at a time when restraint and sacrifice are being asked of every citizen” which mean the president was trying to persuade the people to not ask for their pay since the country is going through rough times and he knew it was hard for the American people. Also, “If this rise in the cost of steel is imitated by the rest of the industry, instead of rescinded, it would increase the cost of homes, autos, appliances” and “It would increase the cost of machinery and tools to every American businessman and farmer.” He was trying to give examples as of what would’ve happened if all steel companies followed the minority in which were taking such actions. Last but not least, “It would add, Secretary McNamara informed me this morning, an estimated one billion dollars to the cost of our defenses, at a time when every dollar is needed for national security and other purposes.” As you can see this would’ve corrupt and bankrupt government because…

Kennedy also uses hortative and imperative sentence structure many times in his speech. Hortative sentences are sentences that urge or call people to action. He uses phrases like "let us," "Let both sides." to encourage people to take action in the earlier part of his speech. Then later on, he uses imperative sentence structure to encourage people to think individually. An example of this being, "Ask not what your country can do for you- ask what you can do for your country."…

Kennedy’s tone or ethos seemed as though he was scolding the Americans. He seems disappointed in his people as he says, “I hope every American, regardless of where he lives, will stop and examine his conscience about his and other related incidents.” Also, if you watch him read the speech you can see in his face the shame, that people of his country, had to be escorted by National Guardsmen, simply because of the color of their…

So many times in the past, those of us who have stood up for the rights of the human race, who have proposed and even implemented change, have been liked by a majority but through the hatred of the minority they are destroyed. Sometimes this destruction is literal, for example assassination. This was the case for Robert F. Kennedy, born on November 20th, 1925 and who died on June 5th, 1968, with three bullet wounds to his chest. This is who I will be talking about today.…

Kennedy used a lot of figurative language, such as when he says “Let both sides”, He is using an anaphora to express what he is seeing in the future, what he expects as his time in office. “Let both sides explore what problems unite us instead of belaboring those problems which divide us.” He is just saying let us be free and equal . Whatever problems that they had, they want to drop that and not become friends but allies. Them fighting is not making things any better its going to want to make them fight even more. Kennedy also uses similes as figurative language; it makes his speech more interesting and people are actually…

Kennedy aspires to represent a glorious nation, but to obtain such status, Americans must ask themselves if they are capable to “forge against . . . enemies a grand and global alliance . . . that can assure a more fruitful life more mankind” (54). The use of cumulative sentences supplements Kennedy’s affirmative request for international unity as he adds rationale to support his vision at the beginning of the composed structure. His confident and assertive tone emphasizes his plea for action due to the fact that he shifts from passively questioning Americans’ ability to requesting Americans to join the historical movement. Kennedy asserts a cumulative sentence as he describes America’s history in letting “the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans” whom are “proud … and unwilling to … permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed . . . at home and around the world” (52). To evoke optimism, Kennedy continues to state what America upholds as he genuinely expresses his patriotism. The well-turned syntax presented in Kennedy’s inaugural address is declamatory as he gracefully incorporates his mission in an arrangement made facile to…

Kennedy’s main argument was to change not only America, but around the world as well. He brought up many great arguments which convinced the audience very well. The first thing he mentions in his speech is poverty. “For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life”(presidency.ucsb.edu). Meaning, one human can rid poverty with the simple tactic of welfare and food stamps and yet, that same man can rid the whole population just with the use of a nuclear weapon. He also makes it a point to talk about freedom, liberty, and “...human rights to which this nation has always been committed...”(presidency.ucsb.edu). clearly referring to the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights. Kennedy wants to insure that “...the survival and the success of liberty”(presidency.ucsb.edu) lives on. The alliance of nations throughout the world is another powerful topic he speaks of. He encourages all of mankind to become one and rejoice in peace. “United there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures. Divided, there is little we can do…”(presidency.ucsb.edu).…
