    The significance of the trend analyses on net sales and net income is that PepsiCo has been steadily increasing its sales over the past 5 years (for a total increase of $9 billion), since 2001. Clearly, they must have sound marketing and advertising strategies, in order to not just maintain their sales figures, but to maintain a growing increase each year. Up until 2005, they were performing equally admirably at increasing their net income as well. While their net income for 2005 is still an impressive 69.9% higher than in 2001, they went from 3 years of massive increases, to a slight decrease. Since the sales figures increased from 2004-2005, it’s not a question of having a “sales slump”. This means they must have increased expenses dramatically during 2005. We know this because net income is tabulated from the income statement, which consists of revenues and expenses. One generation ago, the rate was three times less than now. The number of obese children is continuously growing, which may cause a danger to children and the future of the country. The risk of obesity does not only mean the risk of diseases and health problems, but also the risks associated with psychological and social impact. There is no doubt that one of the biggest causes of obesity is the unhealthy dietary choices that many children make nowadays (IOM). The larger the increase in the percentage of obese children and thereby the increase in the risks surrounding them, the greater the need to confront this problem. Companies, institutions, parents, and individuals should play a role in fighting obesity, but the role of government is most important. The government can enact laws regulating the process of junk food advertisement aimed at children that contribute to the problem significantly. Lawrence Kohlberg, a Harvard psychologist, found that people develop ethically through different stages of human life (Velasquez, Andre, Shanks, S.J., & Meyer, 1987, par. 10). One of the greatest aids to ethical development is education, especially education which demands a student to evaluate ethical situations and reactions.     In today’s society, the food and beverage industry is faced with an ongoing ethical dilemma because they are far more concerned with making money than providing a good, safe, and healthy product for consumers. The biggest victims in this unethical marketing scheme are children. Children are the least informed and most influenced of all potential consumers (5). Although children usually don’t directly purchase these products themselves, their desires strongly influence their parent’s decision on what to buy and what the child will eat. Most products geared towards children are unhealthy, processed foods that are high in sugars and low in nutritional content (6). This has led to a rise in childhood obesity and other health related problems in children. To make matters worse, consumers recklessly purchase products that they aren’t always familiar with simply because of the influential advertising that leaves a lasting impression on them. The packaging techniques of companies are geared directly towards attracting kids based on a product being cool or looking fun. Television ads are action-packed, cool, and hip to attract kids to their product based on nothing but an impression.
