Two stories that are abundant with feminist views and stereotypes are Cisneros' Barbie-Q and My Tocaya. In both stories, we see characters struggle with what it means to be a woman. Cisneros explores the standards women are held up to, and the standards they make for themselves. Cisneros does a wonderful job of bringing out the worries, fears, and Otherness that women frequently grapple with in their daily lives. She writes her tales, all the while reflecting and dismantling stereotypes of women. Cisneros, when participating in a project titled Interviews with Writers of the Post-Colonial World, stated: "I guess my feminism and my race are the same thing to me. They're tied in one to another, and I don't feel an alliance or allegiance with upper-class white women" (Jussawalla, Dasenbrock, 74).…

The story is told from three different POVs: From Libby Day in the present and from Ben and Patty Day in 1985. There’s a fourth narrative near the end that provides a surprising twist. You jump from past to present, slowly piecing together the story as Libby does. Whilst I’m not the biggest fan of multiple perspectives and constant flashbacks, I think that Gillian Flynn has this technique nailed down to a tee. It was a day in the year of 1985 when Ben – Libby’s older brother – allegedly murdered three members of his own family – including his mother, Patty, and two of his younger sisters – in cold blood. Only Libby somehow managed to escape the massacre. It was Libby’s coerced testimony that condemned Ben to a lifelong imprisonment. Now, after…

The Articles written by Jean Young and Greg Miller both focus in what Suzan-Lori Parks intentions were when writing the play Venus. After reading both articles I am siding with Jean Young’s article, "The Re-Objectification and Re-Commodification or Saartjie Baartman in Suzan-Lori Parks's Venus" that Parks is re-objectifying Saartjie Baartman. Throughout this article it explains how Baartman is portrayed as a free women able to make her own decisions, but this is wrong because Baartman is actually a victim. This shows how the play continues to objectify Baartman. Later in the article Young states, “Parks's stage representation in Venus creates the illusion that Baartman was a free and liberated woman who enjoyed her status as a sex object and/or…

The setting of this story takes place on the planet Prelandra, also known as Venus. This planet consists of many floating islands. The islands are quite beautiful, the clouds are purple and the sky is a golden color, the seawater is green and drinkable, from the distance the water looks like glided glass. The islands are not very stable, and they can shake if water hits the mobile islands. All of the islands are mobile, except the main island, which remains stationary. Maledil, the people's god, forbade them to spend the night on the main island; therefore the inhabitants of Perelandra stay on one of the mobile islands. There are many different types of inhabitants on Perelandra, dragons, exotic fish, possums, and unusual looking birds. Ransom, the books main character, mistook the birds for bat-winged reptiles when he first arrived on Perelandra. The tropical climate provides a pleasant atmosphere on Perelandra, thus allowing the inhabitants to move about freely, basking in the agreeable weather.…

In the short story, it shows a group of kids living on Venus are waiting for the sun. As the storylines go well they are waiting a girl named Margot, says to a boy that she hates living on Venus she wished she was back on planet earth and how she always saw the sun everyday. As a result the boy, William gets the group of kids, two waiting for the sun, to lock Margot in a closet and Margot didn't see the sun. When the kids locked Margot in a closet, she was crying and sobbing, but when they came back to let her out she was quiet and they didn't hear a sound coming from inside the closet. This shows that if you get a group of people to turn against someone it could turn into something a lot bigger than what they were trying to…

The Paleolithic era was the time of Homo-sapiens ascendancy. They were hunter-gatherers who survived off of killing animals for food and gathering things such as berries, nuts, and roots. They became more advanced than their ancestors by making tools like the hand axe, chisel, the arrow and spearhead, and the grinder. With some of these tools they would carve small sculpture, the most famous of which is the Venus of Willendorf, a figure representing the ideal woman. In today’s society the representation of beauty has altered significantly since this figure was sculpted.…

Venus, the second planet from the Sun, is a solid and rocky terrestrial planet. Named by the Romans, it is the third brightest thing in the night sky after the Sun and the Moon and is often called the Morning or Evening Star because these are the times it shines the brightest. The atmosphere of Venus is mostly made of CO2 and sulphuric acid. The surface can be very hard to see because of the thick atmosphere; the pressure on Venus is 92 times stronger than the pressure on Earth. The climate is very unpleasant -…

Once upon a time there was a girl who was kind of an idiot but people still liked her because she was not ugly and okay at sports. She was 17. Nothing was really wrong with her, per say, but was anything really right? Probably not. Anyway, one day in this once upon a time this girl was walking along the road, minding her own business. I should probably mention now that in the world this girl lived, no one could hear. Don’t get too excited, she couldn’t either. Like I said, she wasn’t anything special. But as she was walking along this road, something interesting happened. It was in the middle of the day in a suburban neighborhood, so about as boring as a setting could get. No one, especially not this girl, could ever guess what would happen to her next.…
