The comparison between Sunderland and Morgan’s on the style of management and works
This case puts the emphasize on the conflict between Sunderland and Morgan due to the harsh situation which is Sunderland had to deal with Attain’s Content Director, Mike Morgan, and Sunderland’s most important customers Gramen Equipment Company. Morgan, having a Master’s degree from project management, got a background from the small company for the software making and specialized in lean manufacturing training. When it comes to the management style: Morgan loves more chilling, relaxed and entrepreneur surrounding, but not some kind of the bureaucratic way to manage the enterprise, and he leads his team members to follow his own way. He is portrayed as “supporter and partner” and his teams appraise him a lot. Like Sunderland, Morgan went straight to Chama, and is on the same level of the organizational hierarchy as Sunderland whose style of management is depicted as “formal, and efficient, always setting expectations at the outset of a project” she is also criticized for being somewhat inflexible and overly demanding at times. In terms of relations with clients, Sunderland is reportedly “stubborn in the mud” in her notions to achieve exactly what clients really want . However, her experiences still achieve her expertise and confidence for managing massively, high-profit accounts, and she also has a great strategic mindset and provides insightful critiques, suggestions as well. In the other words , Morgan , roll up his sleeves and pitch in whenever needed, would try his level best to protect and guide his own teams and subordinates in terms of being criticized for their works or be misunderstood by the seniors ; on the flipside, Sunderland is not afraid to speak her mind .     The one of the macro problems Wengart Aircraft is having is that they are the second largest company in the industry but are only ranked sixth in profitability (Brown, 2011). Wengart gets a large amount of contracts but they are spending a lot of money reworking most of the aircrafts after they come off of the production line. Another problem is the quality of their aircrafts is in question with the Secretary of Defense and other private customers. The Secretary of Defense has gone as far to say if there is not an improvement in quality they will start holding portions of their payments as penalties. This would not be good because Wengart is already struggling to make profits due to the poor quality of work. In order to fix these problems Ralph Larsen the president of Wengart has brought in an organization development practitioner to help him understand the TQM that the Department of Defense wants him to implement. This leads to the biggest problem Wengart is facing because after the practitioner makes his points, Larsen thinks that the TQM is common sense and that Wengart is already doing most of the points. Larsen than calls a meeting of his vice presidents and put Kent Kelly in charge of the program, even after one of the vice presidents suggested Larsen be in charge of the program because the TQM should be a joint project meaning the human resources and production departments work together. Larsen however did not feel that he had the time to be in charge of the program because he wanted to concentrate his efforts to increasing profits. After the meeting Kelly sends a memo to Allan Yoshida explaining the TQM program, with that information Yoshida calls a meeting of manager and line supervisors to give them the details of the TQM program.     Learning theories have been influential since the 20th century and are now used as diagnostic tools to help identify styles in which learners learn, (Avis et al. 2010). The summary behind these concepts, propose that all people learn differently, and to ensure individual learning needs teachers need to recognize these styles to address differentiation and learning needs of individual within group of learners, (Jarvis, 2006). The key learning theories from research are; behaviourism, cognitivism and humanist. Key academics Pavlov, Skinner and Watson (1973) influence the theory behind behaviourism. They approach behaviourism as a scientific approach towards a desired goal, consisting of reinforcement to shape behaviour. In thus the teachers act as a stimulant; shaping behaviour via repetition and habit forming to create a response. However influential theorists Bruner (1966), Piaget (1926) and Gagne (1985), argue that this style is manipulative, the learner will know how that learning process takes place but not necessarily know why? Behaviourist looked at the environment stimuli influencing response, whereas cognitivists look at the individual’s mental process in learning and how they gain that knowledge. Bruner (1966) believes people learn with the acquisition of knowledge as social process of problem solving. The focus stems to establishing positive conditions that promote the individuals path of being ‘ready to learn’, establishing a ‘meaning to learning’; with initiative and analytical thinking and finally with relevance of self- fulfilment of what ‘motivates the learner’. This takes away the behaviourist approach of learning without an external reward to learning with independent meaning in which you create your own path. Lastly Humanist approach to learning develops the idea of the learners at the centre of the learning process, (Maslow, 1970 and Rodgers et al, 1983).
