This story is about a girl (Kate) who is dieing from cancer and her sister (Anna) has to make the decision to whether to let kate die or give her a kidney to live. First I’m going to tell you about even tho anna is suing her parents mostly Sara her mother for medical emancipation. That they still love each other. Second I’m going to explain how the family exploit Jessie even tho all he wants is to help kate. Third i’m going to tell you about how at the end it is about how everyone feels and what is best for all. The main point of my explaining these points to you is to show that families have troubles and it’s not always easy to get through them. Jessie is an arsonist and that’s how he gets his attention even tho its not him his father Brian has to come put them out. When kate goes to the hospital and they tell kate she need a transplant jessie ask is he a match cuz he want to help his sick sister. Jessie not necessarily a bad kid he’s just neglected and feels unwanted. Jessie loves anna and kate and all he wants is to be apart of his family. The fitzgeralds are a loving family but they do have their problems. Anna with her struggle to give her sister a kidney. Jessie and his fires and him not being able to help kate. Sara and Brian dealing with the law suit. last but not least kate with her illness even tho she wants to die. At the end everyone lives happily except anna who dies in a car accident. This is a true fable of love and struggle of the fitzgerald’s family. Even tho anna doesn’t get to make her decisions. She still wins her case of medical emancipation and dies literally right after the case. Kate lives with her kidney and her memory. Brian helps jessie not be an arsinist and out of love they are a stronger

    When hearing of the kidney transplant, Kate wants Anna to do something about it. She is sick of fighting cancer, sick of waiting around for relapse, and sick of being a burden to Anna ☺. Anna and Kate decide to hire a lawyer, Campbell Alexander, and file for medical emancipation. Both Kate and Anna are thankful for this choice even though it puts Kate’s life in danger. The case goes to court, and ultimately the judge’s verdict is in her favor. Their parents think that even though Anna should have a choice in what she does with her body, she is obligated to save her sister because that is what a family does. Because the kidney causes great controversy, it plays a major role in the plot and meaning of the story. The kidney symbolizes quality of life versus the sanctity of life: “—but at this point the sanctity of Kate’s existence has become completely intertwined with the quality of Anna’s life” (Picoult 408). Everyone knows that Anna would give Kate her kidney, no questions asked. The judge, Campbell, and Anna just think she should still have the right to make that decision since it is regarding the quality of her life. If Anna gives her sister the kidney, both would have many risks when undergoing surgery. Kate will not have the chance to live without Anna’s kidney, therefore, expunging her sanctity of life.
