Karma Upon Death By Scrabble

Karma. What is karma? Is it a part of life? Is it what helps us make decisions? Or is it the

balance of life and everyone living in it? In Charlie Fish’s story Death By Scrabble karma is the main

theme. This fictional story is about a husband and his wife playing Scrabble, a game in which players

earn points for the words made by them with available letters. The story narrates how the words in the

game reflect the practical life of the players. In every story there are literary devices used to help

develop the theme of the story. In this story the terms imagery, the use of foreshadowing, and mostly

irony. By the end of this essay readers will realise how all the use of these literary terms helped develop

the theme of karma in Charlie Fish’s Death By Scrabble.

Imagery in Death By Scrabble I shown a lot and helps conquer the theme behind the story,

karma. “I’m 42 years old, it’s a blistering hot Sunday afternoon and all I can think of to do with my wife

is play Scrabble” (page 1)this is giving the readers an imagery upon the of the setting in which the

husband and wife are upon. While starting there’s the obvious feel and imagination of the image of the

married couple sitting and playing the game at a season of heat and anguish.Playing the game, the couple

begins to play in a way against each other with intention to win, the imagery is seen upon when his wives

“smug expression as she rearranges her letters. Clack, clack clack.” (page1) The husband is as well in a

race to win the game, as seen by him hoping “she has lousy letters” and even finding it “remarkably

Imaginative writing is an art that expresses ideas and thoughts in an imaginative way. This art involves universal laws of human nature, and both time and place. Without connecting the reader through these principles, the author’s work is somewhat meaningless. In order for the author to gain something through his/her work, the author must be able to manipulate the perceptions of the reader. This can be done by successfully incorporating the five elements of craft found in literature. These elements function to focus the reader towards a specific end, and the five elements include: image, voice, character, setting and story. It is imperative that the author utilizes these elements to create a piece that stimulates emotions in the reader.…

While one may look at Richard Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" and Ernest Hemmingway's "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" and pass them off as basically the same, he should be reminded of the cliché "don't judge a book by its cover." Although both are short stories, each work encompasses a number of elements that are characteristically associated with either commercial or literary fiction. By evaluating the author's use of elements of fiction, such as plot, theme, and characterization, and the literary devices diction, figurative language, and detail, one can come to the conclusion that neither story is better than the other.…

We know karma to be a chain of causes and necessary consequences in the world of human actions. Karma is the urge we have of doing something based on our previous actions or behavior. I believe the world has negative and positive energy. For example; an individual soul consists of negative and positive energy, which for a normal person, is balanced out. Therefore, what goes around comes around. In life we choose whether to listen and act upon certain urges or ignore it. I do not believe karma predetermine our future. Karma is the reason why things occur in our lives, based on the actions we have done. Karma is not built upon a distinct action but the accumulation of our conduct and actions.…

Ethan and Zeena’s bedroom is an additional symbol for their marriage. Zeena presides over the bedroom as she does with their marriage. Their room is full of monochrome colors and darkness, like their marriage is dull and lifeless. Tension and unspoken words remain every day but “their thoughts [seem] to dart at each other like serpents shooting venom” (Wharton 98). Neither of them can spare enough emotion towards the other to even start a fight, except for one scene of open anger in their seven years together. Where most couples happily end their day…

Marriage has been portrayed as many things throughout the years. In the short stories, The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and A Jury of Her Peers by Susan Glaspell both portray marriage, and how it does not always bring happiness. Each story was written by a married woman in the 1800s, this could reveal and interrupt how the lives of a married woman were in their time period. In each story, the main character is woman being overpowered by her husband, then when they find out they could be ‘free’ a sudden sigh of relief comes to mind. Only to be either be mislead or to feel trapped again. The authors Kate Chopin and Susan Glaspell illustrate how marriage was in the 1800s and how it was not the source of happiness everyone in today’s society thinks of it to be.…
