Roster Depreciation

✓ Economic Reality =US GAAP

I agree that most of the players actually improved their skill with experience, so if anything, there should be an increase in roster values over time. So from the perspective of economic reality, this is valuable asset like intangible assets.
This asset is similar to the good will. Under previous US GAAP, the goodwill should be depreciated but in new US GAAP, it has been changed not to be depreciated. So it should be evaluated at every end of year without depreciation. This change is a trial to conform Economic reality to US GAAP.

Salary related cost

a. Current roster salary

(Economic Reality =US GAAP) 100% of each salary should be expensed

Springfield, Massachusetts is the new location for the Nor’easters Class A minor league baseball team. The Nor’easters baseball team chose Springfield because of the advantage of having the distance from any major league game venue. The owner of the team, Jimmy Mercante, needs the Nor’easters to bring in enough revenue to be able to run itself, other than some fixed expenses that are paid by their affiliate major league team. This team is looked at for being a development ground for youth players. To make a decision on pricing, a survey was completed, but achieved a relatively low response rate. Although an optimal pricing plan can be arrived at from survey responses, the problem is due to the very low responses rates, the survey results carry little statistical credibility. Therefore, what appears to be a marginal break-even for the first season of play could easily turn into a sizable loss. If it turns out that the percentage of people not participating in the survey actually are not interested in a minor league game, for whatever reasons. Larry Buckingham, Nor’easters Marketing Director, can take further steps in increasing the awareness of the new team by running a campaign to accomplish publicity among local residents, highlighting the fun facts and family. Buckingham should run a shorter survey allowing it to be easier for people to respond and take time to collect the responses. Once the credible responses are recorded, Buckingham can then move forward in validating the price point measurements upon being done with the analysis in the first data survey. If the results show net profit after fixed and variable costs, it could hold a huge launch in selling season tickets for next fall. Bob Cortez, President and General Manager, is right when it came to Buckingham needing to work with the artist to finish the logo design, otherwise…

Regarding roster depreciation, I would agree with the PBPA lawyer, Mr. Hanrahan, that depreciation expense should not be included in the income statement of the team since there are no plans on selling the equipment, only plans of sharing profits with the team players. Besides, experience can definitely add value to the team and increase revenue for the team. The better the players become, the better the games, the better the games, the greater the audience.…

As the marketing director for the Frisco Roughriders Minor League Baseball Team, it has come to my attention that ticket sales are down and fan participation is at an all-time low. To generate sales, management will be offering promotional opportunities each home game to increase revenues and to bring in more fans. The first promotional idea is to offer a military discount to all service members and their families. The discount will consist of buy one ticket at full price and receive a second, third, and even a fourth ticket half off. This promotional tool will last the entire month of November, in honor of the military appreciation month. This will target all age groups, from currently serving to retirees. By offering multiple tickets to a…

The owners capitalized and amortized 50% of the purchase price over six years because that is the maximum percentage allowed by the Internal Revenue Code. I would argue that the value of the player roster is somewhat subjective. The players argument, however, is that with experience comes greater value. That is an argument that can be debated.…

On April 22, 2011, the FASB issued a Proposed Accounting Standards Update, IntangiblesGoodwill and Other (Topic 350): Testing Goodwill for Impairment. Under the proposed ASU, entities testing goodwill for impairment would have the option of performing a qualitative assessment before calculating the fair value of the reporting unit (i.e., step 1 of the goodwill impairment test). If entities determine, on the basis of qualitative factors, that the fair value of the reporting unit is more likely than not greater than the carrying amount, a quantitative calculation would not be needed. The proposal would not change how goodwill is calculated or assigned to reporting units, nor would it revise the requirement to test goodwill annually for impairment. In addition, the proposed guidance does not amend the requirement to test goodwill for impairment between annual tests if events or circumstances warrant; however, it does revise the examples of events and circumstances that an entity should consider. These circumstances include: • Macroeconomic conditions such as a deterioration in general economic conditions, limitations on accessing capital, fluctuations in foreign exchange rates, or other developments in equity and credit markets Industry and market considerations such as a deterioration in the environment in…

Ida acquired a smaller competing company located in Spain, and the acquisition resulted in goodwill being recorded. Assume that (1) the activities in Spain represent the lowest level at which internal management monitors goodwill and (2) the Spanish operations represent CGU under IFRS and reporting unit under U.S. GAAP. At the end of 2009 under GAAP and IFRS the recoverable amount of the asset including goodwill exceeded its carrying amount, suggesting that the goodwill allocated to the Spanish operations was impaired. At the end of 2010 a new legislation act was passed restricting exports of Ida’s main product. The following information relates to the CGU/reporting unit of Ida’s Spanish operations before impairment analysis:…

Brooklyn, one of the 5 boroughs in New York and being known as a magnet for immigrants, had its greatest amount of people moving into the borough during the 40s and 50s. It was the post-war era and families were sprouting all over New York. During that time the Brooklyn Dodgers were a significant part of Brooklyn and baseball history. Today the Brooklyn Dodgers remain as one of the most historical teams to ever play the game. No team could ever compare to its underdog persona they displayed from 1947-1957. It all started at Ebbets Field where the Dodgers became infamous in 1947 with the color barrio being broken by Jackie Robinson. They suffered season after season heart breaks to the dreaded…

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been nothing but great since the end of the first half of the season. Even with a depleted team lacking verified pitching and consistent offense, they were able to overtake the best team in the first half of season, the San Francisco Giants and continue to strive to become one of the best teams in the major leagues. A number of Dodger starters are finally coming off the DL including Clayton Kershaw, Andre Etheir, and Rich Hill but there are a number of sporadic players like Enrique Hernandez, and Bud Norris, who are also coming off of it. The Dodgers seem to finally becoming a postseason team with all the players that are coming back from the DL, but they still aren’t ready for October. Even though players like…
