Alexandra Cousteau is a filmmaker that works with National Geographic. She is recognized for being an advocate of water issues and continuing her grandfather’s work. The speech was held at WSRE Jean and Paul Amos Performance Studio and was sponsored by WSRE Public Square Speakers Series. The studio was like a movie theater with seats going all the way up with the Middle Island where the audio in camera was. The stage had a red rectangle in the middle and a podium off to the right with a big screen in the background. The general purpose of the speech was to give her background and also bring up some of the issues that are plaguing our water systems today. The speaker’s specific purpose was to inform but hopefully persuade people to take action.…

Florence Kelley, in her speech delivered to the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1905, implies that women’s suffrage and other problems at the time, such as child labor, go hand in hand. Kelley’s purpose is to emphasize that if women’s suffrage is gained, it could be the bridge to solving many other problems in America. She adopts a blunt and sarcastic tone in order to appeal to the emotions and guilt of the women of the 1900’s.…

Santiago de Chile is a speech presented from Salvador Allende to Chilean workers in Chile Coup D’état, 1973. The intended audience of the speech was Chileans who suffered in the coup d’état. Throughout the speech, Allende addressed “workers of my country”, “modest women”, and “professionals” to defend the democracy from tyranny. The purpose of the speech is encouraging Chileans to make a sound judgement in fighting against the totalitarianism army force, while defending capitalism to thrive for peace and justice. This is because throughout the speech, Allende uses phrases like “I have faith in Chile and its destiny”, “I will always be next to you”, and “long live Chile! Long live the people! Long live the workers!” as an encouragement for…

The speaker today is Kevin Garrett, a Christian Businessman and Entrepreneur and the President for the development of Cold Stone Creameries all around America. This lecture is about failure, and learning to succeed in the midst of failure. Mr. Garrett states that failure is required to achieve success, and I like that he talks about this, because there is a lot of failure that happens throughout life. All people fail, but only those who stand up courageously after failure can truly succeed in life. Suffering is also a part of failure, but failure does not equal suffering. Since the fall of man, people have suffered much because of the sin of man, and no one can escape this fate, even though it may be no fault of your own. While humans fall often, God can use our suffering to bring about great successes, as long as we put our faith in Christ and leave the results up to Him.…

I was impressed with Mary’s ability to present a very emotional and scary topic with a balanced tone of voice. Because she didn’t present emotion I was able to take in what she was saying even as she used various devices to get her point across and I felt this was very effective. At the end when she spoke to her children as the future of her cause was a tear jerker, and even if this wasn’t necessary, was a smart move to gain support for her cause. The underlying current of her whole speech was that with proper education and an…
