PART A

Write an essay of no more than 1500 words.

Block 3 covers key issues about involving local people in planning and/or running community- based health and social care projects. Using examples from Block 3, discuss how local involvement helps to make care services more responsive to local needs, and explain some challenges in achieving it.

The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) definition of health as contained in its constitution is ‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ (WHO, 1946).

In this essay, I will explore the detrimental effects of poverty on health and well-being, and how, with government funding, community pride and access to greater knowledge and experience through the input of professional partnerships, the communities of Great Britain are taking control of their own neighbourhoods, improving their environments and consequently their health, sense of well-being and ultimately their quality of life.

In April 2001, Thornhill in Southhampton was one of 39 deprived English neighbourhoods to successfully secured £48.7 million of £50bn of available Government funding. Thornhill Plus You (‘Thornhill’) was established. (cited in the Open University 2010) I will use examples from Thornhill and explore/discuss that social problems have social solutions.

Both health improvement and community development are associated with a better quality of life, which has been defined by the World Health Organisation as ‘individuals ' perceptions of their position in life in the context of the culture and value system where they live, and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards and concerns. It is a broad ranging concept, incorporating in a complex way a person 's physical health, psychological state, level of independence, social relationships, personal beliefs and relationship to salient features of the environment. (WHOQOL, 1994)
