Easter

Why do we celebrate Easter ? Really why do we celebrate Easter, every year in the month of

April or March on a Sunday kids get up to find easter baskets that were filled up with candy by

the Easter bunny. Some people go to church to celebrate Easter and finish it up with a big lunch

with their family. Other people stay home with their family and cook a big dinner and spend

quality time. Out of all the months of the year, why does Easter fall in the month of March an

April, and to be exact why is celebrated on a sunday ? “ Easter is celebrated the world over to

mark the ressurection of Jesus Christ”. Also Easter is observed anywhere between March 22

and April 25 of every year. Also a good question is what does the word easter even mean,

Who started this tradition, and where did it come from, and why was it made up ?

Television Networks tells all about Easter and why we celebrate it. It tells that we

celebrate Easter because of Jesus Christ’s resurrection. In this website it tells about how

Easter is called a moveable feast because it does not fall on a set date every year. I can

use this source very effectively in my paper because it tells about the origins of Easter. “Easter.”

Within a matter of weeks it will be Easter time. Eggs will not only be hidden for little children to find but an egg is a symbol of life. Eggs are often the prime example used in a Christian Sunday school to visually explain the Resurrection of Jesus. The eggs shell represents the stone that separated his tomb from the outdoors. When the hard shell barrier cracks, or in this case when the stone is rolled away, life comes into the world. In the Etruscan tomb of the Lioness lays a Banquet scene fresco that illustrates a man holding up an egg. Like Christians, the Etruscans saw the egg as a rebirth symbol, a life after death. In the words of Lucy Bert, if you want to study the living, you have to know a little bit about the dead.…

The Day of the Dead originated from traditions observed as much as 3,000 years ago. These traditions have been passed on from generation to generation until the present day. Originally, the celebrations of the Day of the Dead lasted for a whole month, starting at the beginning of August, or the ninth month on the Aztec calendar. The holiday was moved to October 31st, November 1st, and November 2nd to coincide with the Catholic festival of Allhallowtide. On October 31st, the holiday begins as people prepare for the celebrations which will occur over the next couple days. November 1st is celebrated as Dia de Los Inocentes, or “Day of the Innocents”, which celebrates and honors the children and babies which have passed away. November 2nd is Dia de Los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead”, and celebrates the adults who have died.…

New Year's Day was originally in March before the Julian calendar took effect in 45 BC when January and February were added to the calendar. In the early Roman calendar, March was the beginning of the year. The name “March” originated from the Roman god of war Mars whom was seen as the guardian of agriculture. “Janus was the Roman god of doors and gates, and had two faces, one looking forward and one back. “Caesar felt that the month named after this god (“January”) would be the appropriate “door” to the year”(), the New Year was originally begun on the first day of spring since it is the season of a new beginning in the agricultural and natural word. “The beginning of spring is a logical time to start a new year. After all, it is the season of rebirth, of planting new crops, and of blossoming.…

Easter (in Ukrainian: ‘Velykden’ or ‘Pasha’) is the most important holiday of the year in Ukraine. It’s celebrated on each first week after vernal equinox and full moon. Preparation for Easter starts seven weeks ahead of time with the advent of Lent. Believers don't eat meat and any animal products. Palm Sunday, the week before Easter, is known in Ukraine as Willow Sunday. People bring home willow branches which have been blessed in church and beat this willow of children that were not ill and were healthy. The week is dedicated to preparing for Easter. The Thursday before Easter is called Clean Thursday. During this time an effort is made to finish all field work before Thursday, since from Thursday on work is forbidden. Pure Thursday is connected with ritual of clarification by water. According to Ukrainian tradition one should bathe before sunrise on this day to be healthy all year. The house must be clean too. Good Friday is the day that the women of the family bake "pasha", Ukrainian Easter bread. On Saturday children dye Easter eggs to add to the Easter basket which will be blessed in church. It also includes pysanka, salt, pasha, sausage, ham and most of the people also put in basket red sweet wine. In the evening people go to church for the Easter mass, which lasts all night. After that people go home to celebrate Easter with their families. If they meet other people on the way they say: “Christ is risen!” and these people should reply “Risen indeed”. All the people exchange Easter greetings and give each other painted eggs. On Easter day kids play their favorite Easter game: knocking the eggs. If you knock somebody’s egg and your egg is not broken than you are the winner. The Easter season in Ukraine comes to an end with the cult of the dead is observed. The dead are remembered during the whole week after Easter, especially on the first Monday following Easter Sunday. People gather in the cemeteries, bringing with them some…

    A Good Friday Celebration

In many countries of the world that celebrate Easter, we think of dressing in our best clothes and going to church to pass our respects to Christ. If not Catholic or Christian, we think of a nice peaceful day with bunnies, Easter Egg Hunts for the kids, and a nice day to barbeque with family and friends. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world in a small country made up of thousands of islands is Philippines, a country that contains a majority of uneducated religious people, mostly Catholics and Christians, whom celebrate Easter in a much more traditional sense: through crucifixion re-enactments. This annual celebration of the death of Christ merges traditions of the Catholic Church with Filipino folk superstitions. So why do Filipinos go against the church wishes to emulate the crucifixion when religion is clearly a major role in their lives? Many of the people participate for penance, others as a sign of sacrifice for their prayers to God, some to honor their vow they made to themselves and God, and others just for the experience whilst the church objects and cry out in objections of corporal punishment. Unfortunately for the church, tradition trumps the advice of the bishop and church leaders annually.…

    Easter in Russia

The most obvious difference is that Easter is normally celebrated on a different Sunday in the East and the West. Ever since the Council of Nicaea (A.D. 325), Christians have celebrated the resurrection of Christ on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox (March 21). For most of Christian history, the church used the old Julian calendar (invented in the time of Julius Caesar in the first century B.C.) to determine when the vernal equinox would be. But in the sixteenth century it became clear that the Julian calendar was lagging behind astronomical time, and a new calendar (the Gregorian) was proposed. The Western Church accepted this new calendar, but the Eastern Church rejected it. At present, the Julian calendar is 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar, and is gradually losing more and more time. That means that whereas we calculate the date of Easter from March 21 by our Gregorian calendar, the Eastern Church calculates it from March 21 by their older calendar, which equals April 3 by our calendar.…

Easter is far less important than Christmas in Britain. Although it involves a four-day weekend, there are very few customs and habits associated generally with it, other than the mountains of chocolate Easter eggs which children consume. Some people preserve the tradition of eating hot cross buns on Good Friday (Calendar of special occasions). Quite a lot of people go away on holiday as this time. Bc in this time has Valentine’s day (St. Valentine's Day and Gretna Green)…
