Unfortunately this week we were unable to have a session with Cindy. Before we started our stretch class Cindy had fallen out in the parking lot and rolled her ankle. She fell forward and cut her hand as well as bruised her cheek. When we found out that it was Cindy who had fallen we immediately went over to her to see how she was doing. She was icing her ankle and had a covering over her hand. During this time there was discussion of what should be done in Cindy’s best interest. Cindy left the YMCA to go to the doctor and receive stitches in her left hand, and have the rest of injuries checked out. While she was leaving we noticed her walking seemed to be OK, however she expressed to an employee that her ankle was bothering her. When Cindy left she was enthusiastic about returning next Friday and we told her we would call her during the week to see how she was doing. Specifically we will have to address how her hand is healing, if she has pain while walking in her ankle, as well as how much pain she has from the bruise on her face. We will also have to find out what she feels her level of functioning is with her ankle and hand, as well as what her doctor said she should and should not be doing. When Cindy left the YMCA we were able to observe Brittany and her client,…

Mary (changed name) was admitted with right cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and was now just waiting for residential placement. One of the side effects left over from her stroke was that she had a drop-foot for which she had a splint and a walking stick; she had declined to use a frame. Mary was one of the patients on my team so I was getting to know her quite well during my first two weeks on the ward. I was working with another patient when I saw Mary twist on her ankle and try to steady herself on her stick. This had the effect of spinning her round and she fell to the floor onto her left hip. I ran to help, she was in a lot of pain and slight shock, I called down the ward for help several members of staff came to help saying "do this" and "do that" all at the same time, I was quite over whelmed. Mary was rolled back and forth onto a sling, hoisted up and placed on her bed, all the while I was looking after her head, I did not know what else to do so I talked to her to calm her down, which was difficult due to all the commotion. On initial examination the senior nurse on duty said it looked like she had broken her femur, which was later confirmed. Her residential placement was cancelled and she was transferred to stepping hill.…

On arrival at Alec’s room I knocked the door and said who it was and waited for a reply” you must treat people as individuals and respect their dignity” (NMC2012), on Alec’s reply I entered the room with the other carer we both introduced ourselves and explained what we were in to do “you must ensure you gain consent before you begin any treatment or care” (NMC2012). While the other carer looked out Alec’s clothes for the day giving him a choice of two outfits to pick from I had put on the tap to heat the water chatting to Alec as I got everything organised once organised the other carer and I put on the apron and gloves to prevent infection and moved the stand aid next to the bed using the correct moving and handling techniques we got alec to sit on the edge of the bed taking the strap for the stand aid we checked that it was fit for use. We put the strap around Alec and fastened it properly explaining to Alec what…
