Jury Duty: A Short Story
I opened my mailbox on this warm and sunny day to find a letter for jury duty. As I walked back to my house I kept on thinking why it was me. I looked up to the sky to see the sun gone and clouds of rain instead. This is not going to be my day.
I entered my beautiful blue condo to see my son staring at my ominous face. “Daddy, what’s wrong?” Jamie said discreetly.
“Nothing is wrong, Jamie. Daddy just got a disappointing letter in the mail today,” I said.
“What’s it about, Daddy?” Jamie questioned with a look of happiness on his face when his mother entered through the door.
“It’s just about me having to attend jury duty. It’s an adult topic, Jamie,” I said with a little frustration in my voice.
“That’s great news, honey! Did they tell you

Since I am ambidextrous, I decided to use my left hand. As I then looked back down to my signature I realized that I wrote it sloppily. As I walked back to the kitchen, I realized that attending jury duty is my personal duty as a citizen of Virginia. So as I handed my check to Emily, I looked at my watch and saw that it was almost four o’clock.
I fastly walked with volition up the steps and walked toward Emily’s and my bedroom. I looked into the closet and saw a nice black suit to wear. I put my suit on in time to brush my teeth and shave. By the time I finished, Emily was downstair in a lovely white dress and the babysitter was already with Jamie in the livingroom. “Hello Amelia! Don’t forget to put Jamie in bed by eight o’clock and we should be back by ten thirty at the most. Good night Jamie!” I quickly said before we left.
As we arrived at the party, I saw a lot of cars parked in the parking lot. We entered the large glass doors into the room and our eyes were drew right toward the candid shot of Mr. Wattson, Emily’s boss. I looked around at the rest of the party with scrutiny and noticed that the party was elegant with a bartender serving drinks, waiters serving appetizers, a dj, and a dance

Tom wondered for what seemed to be the millionth time why Dectives were required to dress like wall-street bankers or stock analysts. At least that was the expectation in public, however the moment he had the office to himself, he unknotted his tie, slipped off the linen suit jacket, and undid the top button of his shirt, then sat back in his chair, raised his eyes to the ceiling, and tapped the tip of a ballpoint pen against his teeth. That was Tom's usual mode of concentration and contemplation, and so intent was the man's focus on the new case that all else slipped from his mind, even the recollection that he'd texted his wife. Therefore, the sudden familiar sound of her voice, accompanied by the enticing aroma of barbecue, startled him, and he immediately shot upright. The sight of Lila elicited a smile that only widened with the greeting and kiss. "Sorry baby."…

My thoughts on my early morning experience during jury duty selection-I noticed a few elements of successful teaching. The judge was very explicit in explaining the judicial process for selecting a jury, and in explaining the process for a civil case. She presented, gave examples, and even checked for understanding throughout the process. It was funny how I started connecting her questioning of the potential jurors to be like TDQs in the way that each question was essential to some element of the case (were there any connections to the parties involved, the businesses, workers, was there a past experience like the case that could impact your thinking or decision…

“You are in the hospital, Marielle.” she replied quite calmly, especially considering how she had just told me that I was in the HOSPITAL! “Um… this is a dream… right?” I asked, still confused as to how I could have gone from LL Bean to the hospital so quickly, without remembering anything. “No sweetie, you collapsed at LL Bean, and someone called 911, so we took you to the hospital. You have been asleep for quite a while. Your parents went home for the night, but should be back in a few hours.” She explained. “Somehow,” I thought, “she has kept the same face through this whole conversation.” But then I realized that there were tubes coming out of me and literally, I mean literally, as in, I actually did this… I screamed! The nurse must have thought that I was dying or something, because for once, her facial expression changed. A few hours later, Mom and Dad came bursting in. I wasn’t all that surprised to see them, especially considering that I had just been watching TV for the past 4 hours. “Hi Mom, hi Dad,” I said to them. “Oh! Thank goodness you’re awake!” my dad replied quickly. “Can someone please tell me what’s wrong with me sometime soon?” I asked them with qute a bit of…
