Junior is the main character and the narrator of the novel “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” by Sherman Alexie. At the beginning of the novel Junior introduces himself as a guy born with a brain damage, 42 teeth, and very big feet (shoe size 12 in the third grade). He has large hands, an epic skull and a very skinny body. “With my big feet and pencil body, I looked like a capital L walking down the road“ (p.12, II.28-29).

Arnold starts The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian feeling like the reservation outcast, but once he transfers to the fancy white school in Reardan, he becomes a basketball star who gets carried around on people's shoulders. Meanwhile, he gets to date the hottest girl in the school. Later on he becomes best friends with the smart guy. In the end, Junior and Rowdy reunite during a basketball, discussing who Junior is as a person,

Arnold has a disability, and gets bullied by almost everyone on the reservation. His family is in poverty, and his father is a drunk. Junior confidently explains his hardships and experiences through words and images; however, it is through his drawings that he most explicitly states his conflicts and outlook on the world. At the beginning of the novel, Junior explains, “I draw because words are too unpredictable. I draw because words are too limited…But when you draw a picture, everybody can understand it” (5).
