Julius Caesar's Political Career
Gaius Julius Caesar was born in 100 BCE. He began his political career when he was elected military tribune in 72 BCE. He was appointed Aedile 7 years later in 65 BCE. As Aedile, he was in charge of putting free entertainment and shows to the public. These jobs helped him gain the support of the plebeians. In 60 BCE, he was able to use the support of the plebeians to form the first triumvirate, which was basically three people ruling Rome. The triumvirate consisted of Crassus, Pompey and Caesar. Pompey had the patricians supporting him, Caesar has the plebeians on his side, and Crassus has the money to support them. Not too long after he formed the first triumvirate, he was elected as consul in 59 BCE and started to conquer Gaul. He also conquered some parts of Germany and Britain. Since Rome thought that Caesar was rebelling againstRome, the senate charged Caesar for treason. Pompey and Caesar fought against each other for 2 years. Eventually, Caesar won the civil war, but Pompey survived and fled. Caesar pursued Pompey all over the Mediterranean. Pompey was killed in Egypt by an assassin who wanted to help Caesar. After winning the civil war, he got five years of consecutive consulship. Caesar tried to do what he needed to do, but the senate kept on interfering. Caesar was getting frustrated about this so he threatened the senate to make him dictator. He successfully appointed himself dictator in 45 BCE. Shortly after he appointed himself dictator, he was assassinated on March 15, 44 BCE. Even though Caesar might have committed some questionable actions, he did what he did to help Rome. One reason how Caesar made Rome better was that he conquered Gaul, was the first one to attack and conquer some parts of Germany and was also the first one to conquer the southern half of Britain.
