Anton‎y’s persuasion in his speech
Act 3 Scene 2
In this essay I am going to explain and analyse Antony’s speech to show how he tries to persuade his audience. There are many features in Mark Antony’s speech which show he is trying to persuade the crowd.
One of the many features he uses to persuade the audience is using memorable, quotable dialogue which endures the crowd and makes them want to listen an example of this is the line which starts this persuasive speech “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears.” Some other enduring phrases are: “lend me your ears”, “The evil that men do lives after them”, “I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him”, “But Brutus is an honourable man.” It is also a powerful speech, using both rhetorical patterns and emotive imagery to stir the crowd up against Caesar’s killers.
Another thing Antony said to change the crowd’s mind and say Brutus was wrong without actually saying it was with some clever oratorical skills. Throughout the speech he repeatedly says “Brutus was ambitious.” and “Brutus was an honourable man.”, but he didn’t really mean it he was saying it sarcastically to test Brutus. Each time he said this he changed the tone he was speaking in; from sincerity to irony and just mocking Brutus. He gradually built up the tone to make them have a bad opinion of Brutus, because if he just came up and said “Brutus is a horrible man, because he killed Caesar,” nobody would believe him they would think he was the horrible one who is insulting Brutus for doing a brave and honest thing in killing Caesar. He uses the same oratorical skills to call Brutus a liar when he says Caesar was not ambitious, Brutus says Caesar was ambitious, Brutus would not tell lies. Since all three of these statements cannot all be true the speech edges the crowd towards believing that the third statement, Brutus would not tell lies, is false. He continues this when he says “I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, but here I am to speak what I

    Antony proves to be a master of persuasion. He uses ethos in his speech to obtain trust by showing he is a man who respects all. “Friends, Romans, lend me your ears”(III.ii.73). He doesn't show good will or respect for Caesar as it’s apparent he has a sarcastic tone when he mocks him with the repetition of “honorable men” when he is talking about the conspirators, an example of verbal irony. He also uses logos to point out obvious reasons why Caesar wasn't actually ambitious.     Antony loved Caesar and was completely against his murder, so he used rhetorical strategies to persuade the Romans to be against the perpetrators. For example when Antony says “Yet Brutus says he was ambitious, and Brutus is an honorable man” he is using the mix of sarcasm and logos. Antony repeats this same thing over and over again until the Romans start questioning if Brutus truly is an honorable man. His sarcasm and repetition were both great rhetorical tactics that were used to manipulate and confuse the Roman’s minds. Antony brings together the perfect amount of ethos and pathos when he states, “ ‘Tis his will. Let but the commons hear this testament- which pardon me, I do not mean to read- And they would go and kiss dead Caesar’s wounds And dip their napkins in his sacred blood,” (III,ii,127-132). This is essential because it shows that Antony is credible and trustworthy because he has Caesar’s will. This also appeals to the people’s emotions because they become saddened over Caesar’s death. Antony used his tactics to make the Romans trust him and his views, which led to them rioting against the perpetrators.     Mark Antony used the three persuasion tools to turn the roman crowd against Brutus. The most convincing use of ethos in Antony’s speech is in the first line of the speech; “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears!” This shows that Mark Antony is trying to get in to the Roman crowd’s hearts.     The first line itself shows Antony’s persuasive power. It is in trochaic meter, which is very attention grabbing, as the crowd immediately calms down. Antony reiterates Brutus’s opening, changing only a few words. The line “Friends, Romans, Countrymen” (pg. 17, line 75) show Nomos, as Antony wants to find common ground with the people. The second line displays irony, as Antony is indeed here to praise Caesar. So here he is already proven manipulative, even though he has just started speaking. In the fourth line, Antony states, “The good is oft interred with their bones” (pg. 117, line 78). It is ironic, because he had just stated that he was not there to praise Caesar, he does. On the 5th line, the meter change may hint at the fact that he is trying to shift from praising Caesar to proving that Caesar was unfairly murdered.
