Geography Assessment: Emma Hockley
Explain how and why the lives of Abdul and Giles are connected
Abdul and Giles are both farmers in their different countries, Abdul is from Afghanistan while Giles is from Britain. Out in Afghanistan there is a dry, semi-desert climate and with only 372mm of rain every year in Kabul, the capital, it makes it very difficult to grow crops. London on the other hand has about twice as much rain which makes life a lot easier for Giles, he grows barley and wheat and earns around £25000 from his farm. Abdul has four children with his wife Saleema, where as Giles, from Staffordshire, has three children and is married to his wife Jenny. Jenny and Giles’ eldest son is called David, at the 19 he is already a heroin addict which affects the whole family. Giles will be blaming himself for the mess and not giving David money, Stealing drugs was David’s only option to get what he wanted.

Compared to the age 78 which is the life expectancy in Britain there is a big difference. This means that people in Britain are able to pay for food to keep them fit and healthy and have easier
