JROTC was established in 1916 when the US prepared to enter WW1 in 1917 and the two levels of ROTC came to be established. The senior ROTC programs were put into collages their task was to commission officers for service in the military. The junior ROTC programs were put into high schools. Their primary task was to prepare male teenagers for the military service. The JROTC program dates way back to the 1800’s. The founder Captain Alden Patridge introduced the program to the military academy in 1819. They gave women the right to join the ROTC program for the first time because of the women’s rights act. In the 1990’s many universities dropped the ROTC programs because of the “ Don’t ask, Don’t Tell” military policy. This policy encouraged homosexual members of the military to hide their sexual identities or they could face possible discharge from the military for being a homosexual. However the ROTC program continued to thrive in American universities. In today’s JROTC the military still informs young Americans about the military and all the opportunities the military offers. The JROTC today does not teach combat tactics like they did in the 1990’s. Today’s JROTC allows anyone in the program because the JROTC today does not judge on what gender you are. Today’s JROTC is teaching cadets on how to march and helping them focus on their schoolwork also at the same time. You can earn ribbons and medals for different things you have done in the program like raiders, drill, color guard and many other things. At the end of the year the JROTC program has an award ceremony for all the cadets and they get awarded for all they have done in the program and some people get lettered and some get just medals and a ribbon or they get an collage scholarship. All the cadets either make big achievements or don’t achieve anything at all because they didn’t put in any effort to have an achievement. The JROTC program is great and it helps kids achieve academic excellence so they can get into a good collage. There has been cadets who had gone to collage for free because of the JROTC program and it was because of their academic excellence and how bad they wanted to go to collage. JROTC also helps cadets get into the military if they want, the cadets who want to go into the military will go in a rank or two higher than the rest of the young men and women who are going in just after high school.
