Hanging Habagat

A monsoon is a seasonal prevailing wind which lasts for several months. It is wind blowing part of the year from one direction, alternating with a wind from the opposite direction. The word monsoon is derived from the Arabic word mausim, which means “season” and refers to a wind system that reverse direction between winter and summer.

One of its kind is Hanging Habagat or Southwest Monsoon. It is a violent wind brought by typhoons of the tropics and comes from southwest direction and bring heavy rains in west part of the Philippines. The southwest monsoon is generally expected to begin around the start of May through October. In a report prepared by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), this natural phenomenon gets its start during the summer months in the northern hemisphere, when the Asiatic continent becomes warmer than the surrounding seas so a low-pressure area develops over the continent. This happens when a large mass of air rises, causing low pressure in the area the mass left empty and inducing air from over the ocean to flow towards the continent. The winds, rushing toward the low-pressure area, carry heat and water vapor which, when passing across the Philippines, becomes the prevailing winds in the country. "This is what is locally known as the ‘habagat,’ the southwest monsoon," the report said. The report said it is the country’s western portion that receives a substantial amount of rainfall while the southwest monsoon holds sway over the

Explain what causes the "monsoon rain season". The summer season in southeast Asia experiences “monsoon rain seasons”. This occurs when a shallow thermal low develops over Asia’s continental interior, and the air within the low rises and begins to flow counter-clockwise. This motion results in moisture-bearing winds sweeping into land from the ocean. The humid air converges with dryer air from the continent, which has an additional lifting effect and brings the air to its saturation point. Heavy rains and thunderstorms result.…

During the 2010 monsoon season (July and August), Pakistan experienced the worst floods recorded in its history. Heavy rainfall caused flash floods in the north and north-western regions of the country. The subsequent run-off created a southward moving mass of water approximately the size of the United Kingdom. The flood waters travelled downstream through Punjab and Sindh until they reached the Arabian Sea.…

Temperatures in spring and fall lie between the extremes of winter and summer, but can fluctuate significantly within a short time span as warm and cold air masses battle for control. This clash of differing air masses causes severe weather, particularly in spring, which is peak tornado season in the state. Spring is also the wettest time of the year and can bring floods, whereas autumn tends to be much drier, often the sunniest and least humid…

The hot season lasts between the months of May and September, where daytime temperatures average at about 102 degrees Fahrenheit, and the northeastern monsoon blows. The warm season lasts between October and April, where daytime temperatures average at about 87 degrees Fahrenheit. Humidity is high all year, but annual rainfall averages less than 5 inches. The central and southern inland areas can get some rain in the period from July to October, being touched by the summer monsoon, and also some additional rain during winter, from November to March. But overall, precipitation is rare. This makes the country very dry during the other months of the…

The southwest summer monsoon, a four-month period when massive convective thunderstorms dominate India's weather, is Earth's most productive wet season.[31] A product of southeast trade winds originating from a high-pressure mass centered over the southern Indian Ocean, the monsoonal torrents supply over 80% of India's annual rainfall.[32] Attracted by a low-pressure region centered over South Asia, the mass spawns surface winds that ferry humid air into India from the southwest.[33] These inflows ultimately result from a northward shift of the local jet stream, which itself results from rising summer temperatures over Tibet and the Indian subcontinent. The void left by the jet stream, which switches from a route just south of the Himalayas to one tracking north of Tibet, then attracts warm, humid air.[34]…
