JOT2 Task 1

RJOT Task 1

I recently left a position at a small Early Childhood Education center in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school consisted of children ranging in age of 6 weeks to 6 years. I worked there for eleven years in a variety of age groups. Most of my experience was in Preschool, with children who were three and four years old. The school was located in Point Park University located in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, in one of the University’s dorm buildings and took up two floors. Each classroom was between three and four dorm rooms combined in size. The rooms were long and narrow with partial walls knocked down and converted into doorways between the rooms. Because of the classrooms being converted from individual dorm rooms to single classrooms, there were many blind spots in the room. There for, each classroom had at least two teachers spread out among the room to be able to see every child and what they were doing at all times. It was very rare that there were only two teachers per class. Many times, the classroom had two teachers, and students from the university enrolled in a work study program helping to work with fifteen to twenty students. The students that were enrolled in the school were middle to upper class children of university employees and children of families who worked in the downtown Pittsburgh area. The school, because of its broad age range, had over 100 children enrolled at any given time. The families had the option of enrolling their children full time, eight to ten hours a day/five days a week or part time, at least three days a week for eight to ten hours. The school, because it was located in an old dormitory, was not the best lit due to its long, narrow hallways with many doorways and no natural light. The classrooms, for the most part, were bright and each room had many windows to give natural light. The rooms and hallways were decorated with artwork made by the students,

While the walls were decorated with artwork, the tone, or mood, of the school made the place seem dreary. An enormous reason for this was the principal, who would only leave her office in order to yell at students. As one can imagine, the kids were not fond of the principal. They would often mock her voice when she came on the loud speaker. Her vigilance made my classmates more willing to act out, and was counteractive. This created a harsh, or uncomfortable learning environment. Children feared the principal’s punishments, and I believe a student should never feel fear in a learning environment. Therefore, unfortunately, we did not enjoy waking up every morning to go to school. Overall, I believe this showed in the schools…

The room was bright, though the fluorescent bulbs lined up perfectly along the ceiling had a major part in that, the sun was shinning through the windows on the left side of the room. The chalk boards located at the front of the classroom were as clean as could be and almost looked brand new, if it were not for the scratches. The right and back walls were filled with posters and pictures of previous graduates. The shelves around the room stacked with everything an English room would need from dictionaries and thesauruses to loose-leaf and pencils. The room seemed to have a particular place for everything, right down to the 6 rows of desks that were place in straight lines facing the front of the…

As a father of three boys, ages four, two, and most recently, a two month old, I have been interested about the education options available for them. It was not until I attempted to conduct my own research on the early childhood education, specifically preschool for my oldest son, then three years old, did I realize the difficulty in doing so. Having been a member of The United States Air Force, I was afforded the opportunity to enroll my children into the robust, yet sometimes frustrating, Child Development Center that is established on each Air Force base. Living in a world of checklists and constant inspections, I did not worry about the quality of the program.…
