When the British evacuated Philadelphia in June 1778, Galloway went to British-occupied New York until December 1781 when he left for England. Galloway was reviled by the revolutionaries, who considered him a traitor. As punishment for his loyalty to the British Crown, his estates were seized, and when he applied for readmission to Pennsylvania in 1793, his request was rejected.
