Joseph Campbell Definition Of A Hero
¨Hard times do not create heroes. It is during the hard times when the hero within us is revealed.¨ (Riley, Bob) In life, there are many different definitions of a hero. Anyone can be labeled as a hero depending on the source. A hero is someone who is admired or idealized for their courage, achievements and noble qualities, however, the definition of a hero can vary depending on the situation or person. A hero in the real world functions by persevering and sacrificing for the better. For instance, a real-life hero is a firefighter. They go out into dangerous fires to save the lives of thousands of people and animals. Joseph Campbell illustrates this when he says, ¨A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something better than oneself.¨(Joseph Campbell) Even though it may be a life-risking task, they still persevere to save lives and inspire everyone around them with their …show more content…
A hero never gives up when times get rough or get timid when it is time to be brave. In this case, “A hero is not one that never falls. He is one that gets up, again and again, never losing sight of their dreams” (Anonymous) A real-life hero always perseveres and shows their strength by carrying on and sacrificing for the greater good. A hero does not follow the path of others and is unlike any other because of their achievements, abilities, or personal qualities. Jonathan Lockton Huie explains, “If you want to be heroic, do not emulate your heroes, learn from them. Heroes do not follow anyone, they set their own course.” (Jonathan Lockton Huie) The average hero is an ideal or role model under someone’s personal definition of heroic qualities. However, everyone’s hero has different characteristics that make them stand out. Unlike the average person, heroes take their own course, face challenges and act with courage which makes them stand out to resemble a

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” Campbell’s quote declares that a hero is any person that is intent on making the world a better place for all people. An ordinary individual who can find the strength to persevere and endure overwhelming obstacles for a greater cause is a hero. While numerous people can be considered a hero, it primarily takes perseverance, determination, courage and motivation. This is illustrated by the revolutionary acts of Mahatma Gandhi and Stephen Hawking, as well as the life-changing deeds of everyday heroes like Lisa Chesser.…

“A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom.”(Bob Dylan) This quote is a compelling thought for me. It has the ability to make you sit back and think about not only about heroes, butwhat true heros are. Heroes are the people that stand out from the crowd and show heroic character traits through their actions. I believe heroes are not the typical stereotype of a “hero” that we usually think of. This means that although, he maybe gorgeous and talented, Zac Efron doesn’t take action to greatly improve society. Or maybe that even though she has sold over 14 million albums worldwide, Taylor Swift does not fit the true definition of a hero. Also, heroes are often considered as the “knight in shining amour” that are gallant and strong, and rescues the “maiden in distress”. Or maybe the comic book version, where the invincible arrogant guy that often represents nothing of a hero, more of a villain in some cases. A true hero is defined by their responsibility and determination and how they concern for others and risk things when needed. To be defined a hero, a person’s traits of responsibility and determination must be shown through their concern for the wellbeing of others and how they takes risk when necessary to improve society.…

Heroes have three main traits: enough guts to ignore those who have a problem with their goals and the way they are living their life, devotion to their cause, and benevolence towards everyone, no matter what. They do their best to be brave, courageous, and have spirit; in one word, gutsy. Even though many people didn’t support her and called her a witch, Joan of Arc had the bravery and strength to continue fighting for her cause. She used her courage and spirit to ignore negative opinions from the people around her. Heroes are devoted to their cause, and are persistent in trying to reach their goals, especially through hard times. An example is Penelope, wife of Odysseus. He went away to fight in a war, and didn’t come back. “Everyone by now took for granted that he was dead, except Penelope, his wife…the hope that her husband would return was faint, but it never died.” (Mythology, Edith Hamilton.) Penelope waited twenty…

The definition of a hero is a relatively simple one; a hero is someone who positively impacts others through their actions and accomplishments. While we all have different views on who exactly we see as a hero, there are certain individuals, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln, who have undeniably changed the world and fit this definition. I have found that many of the individuals who society, and I personally, view as great heroes, share a certain set of traits that almost definitely had a large part in their accomplishments. This is why I believe that bravery, selflessness, and determination are three vital traits when it comes to defining what it means to be a hero.…

The definition of hero varies among people but, in my definition of a Hero is a person who is able to achieve the difficult task regardless of the resistance of society or sacrificing themselves in risky situations. A hero is not a person who is easily scared, gives up easily and selfish. In my opinion, when people are described as “hero” we neglect their bad behaviors, but this doesn’t imply to every hero we should be aware of such things because we all have our own flaws.…
