Joseph And Feilicia Masculinity
The paradigm masculinity is often occurring in Joseph and Felicia's relationship. Joseph tends to fulfill this role, there are many instances where he demonstrates masculinity within the relationship. He decides what dates they should attend, and he always elects to pay for the outings. his competitive nature is visible in the relationship also, when Felecia does a generous gesture for Joseph he eventually tries to out perform her; she once bought him new basketball shoes in returned Joseph purchased Felecia a Michael Kors purse. Of course his gestures are well appreciated from her it’s unnecessary to make turn their relationship into a competition, doing nice gestures just because is part of being in a successful relationship. When they go out and Felecia elects to wear revealing outfits his aggression gets worse, insulting her questioning why she has certain outfits the verbal abuse in the relationship erupts. Slut, stupid, child, immature are a few of the words directed to her when they are arguing, Felecia usually is shocked with his words and doesn’t know how to respond, instead she cries and questions the abuse she endures. these are all traits that can be linked to the masculinity paradigm. Past experiences with other couples and friends help better evaluate Joseph and Felicia's relationship. Joseph uses his past experiences to also help him reflect on Felecia and his relationship. In his past relationship he was a devoted boyfriend only interested in making his girlfriend happy, the aggressiveness was non-existence in his past relationship. Unfortunately his devotion wasn’t enough to stop him from getting cheated on, and as a result he constantly uses his past experiences to question Felecia’s true motive.     In reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz, there is a large emphasis imposed on both male and female gender roles of the Dominican Republic. Gender roles are social and behavioral norms that, within a specific culture, are widely considered to be socially appropriate for individuals of a specific sex. However in this book, it is apparent that there is an extreme machismo attitude that is expected of men from the Dominican Republic. Consequentially, the women are degraded and are used no more than as a commodity. The book, mainly narrated through Yunior, encompasses many roles of each gender, but most prominently is male machismo. Machismo is defined as a strong sense of masculine pride, or exaggerated exertion of masculinity, or male-like qualities. It is derived from the Spanish word macho, literally meaning male or masculine, and through time it has come to be the defining characteristic for males in Latin America (Machismo and the Dominican Republic). Sadly, machismo falls under an umbrella term that ultimately justifies all acts by males, including what they say, think and more importantly how they distinguish themselves as men. Although the book takes place in Paterson, New Jersey, there is still an intense feeling of machismo in many of the male characters in the book. While machismo allows a man to define himself, it is evident that in the process, the importance of females are degraded and are depreciated in turn.…
