Josef Mengele: A Cruel, Inhumane Person
Childhood Josef Mengele was a cruel, inhumane person. He was born on March 16, 1911, in Gunzburg Germany. His parents were Karl and Walburga Mengele. Josef had two brothers named Karl and Alois. His father worked as a farm manufacturer. When finished with High School, Mengele went to the Goethe University at Frankfurt. He also went to the University of Munich where he studied philosophy and earned his Phd in physical anthropology. Physical anthropology is the study of human biological and physiological characteristics and their development. Mengele then went to work at the Institute for Heredity Biology and Racial Hygiene in Frankfurt for Dr. Otmar von Verschuer. Verschuer and Mengele studied twins together at this institute.

Mengele’s work at Auschwitz was tracing the genetic organs of various diseases in twins. Mengele did surgeries such as organ removal, castration, and amputation all without anesthesia. He also dissected people and took their organs out. “Jona Laks says Mengele removed organs from people without anashots, esthetic, and if one twin died the other would be murdered.” Vera Kriegel says that he killed people with an injection to the heart, and then dissected them. “He had a wide variety of other research interests, including a fascination with heterochromia, a condition in which an individual's two irises differ in coloration. He himself also conducted several experiments in an attempt to unlock the secret of artificially changing eye color. Less famously, he zealously documented in camp inmates the progression of the disease Noma, a type of gangrene which destroys the mucous membrane of the mouth and other tissues. Experiments performed by Mengele on twins included unnecessary amputation of limbs, intentionally infecting one twin with typhus or other diseases, and transfusing the blood of one twin into the other.” Some other experiments that he did were measurements, blood, eyes, shots, diseases, surgeries, and death. Some blood tests that Josef Mengele would do is extract blood from one twin into another. He also put injections or shots of chemicals into the twins. These twins came to Auschwitz in 1944. When they first got there, they were immediately recognized as twins. Mengele did very many experiments on them. When the twins first got to Auschwitz, “Mengele gave the twins injections, drew large amounts of blood, and meticulously measured their body parts and photographed them, often for six to eight hours at a time.” These are just some small experiments that Mengele did on Eva and Miriam Kor. Another set of twins were the Kriegel twins. “Vera Kriegel and her twin sister Olga were just five years old when they were taken from their village in Czechoslovakia to Auschwitz.” These set of twins had the same procedure as the Kor twins. There were other twins such as Bernard and Simon Zajdner, Hedvah and Leah Stern, Marc and Francesca Berkowitz, and Irene Hizme and Rene Slotkin. Marc Berkowitz stated that “One morning in July 1944 I saw my mother in a long line of women moving to the gas chamber. Mengele called for me and gave me a job to do in the crematorium. He knew I would see my mother go to her death. A couple of days later he asked me if I still believed in God."
