JOSE RIZAL

The movie tells the life story of Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. It covers his life from his childhood to his execution at the hands of the Spanish forces occupying the Philippines in the late 19th century. We are also thrown into the world of Rizal's novels. So we get a glimpse of how he viewed Filipino society under the Spanish heal.

One note, this movie is not for the faint of heart. There are graphic depictions of violence and even torture. The opening few scenes depict some episodes from Rizal's novels. In one a Catholic priest rapes a Filipina. I guess I now know where the Mestizo (i.e., mixed blood) class came from in the Philippines. In the other scene a Catholic priest beats a child for alleged stealing. Strong stuff, and it made me wonder how the Catholic Church could possibly retain any power in the country, if this is what the national hero thought about it.

The movie introduces us to the life of subjugation of the Filipino people under the rule of the Spanish friars. From the execution of three Filipino priests in 1872 for alleged subversion to the harsh and unequal treatment of Filipino students in the schools, this film is a stinging indictment of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. We see scenes both from Rizal's actual life but also from his imagination.

As a young man, Jose is sent to study in Spain. This is a plan hatched by his brother Paciano. Jose will write and do everything in his power to bring to the attention of the world the abuses of Spanish power in the Philippines, while Paciano will protect the Rizal family at home and keep up the struggle against Spanish rule. Jose excels in his studies as a medical student at Madrid University and eventually earns a degree as an ophthalmic surgeon. Meantime, he becomes involved with a group of radical Filipino students who also seek to end the Spanish abuses in their country. He eventually has a falling out with the student group as he realizes

The film “José Rizal” by Marilou Diaz-Abaya is not foreign to me. I have watched it before and believed its contents. It is amazing to see all their efforts in trying to recreate the life story of our national hero, Jose Rizal. The movie is very convincing as well. However, after attending KASPIL1 classes, I found out that not everything I know about Rizal is correct. After watching the movie again, I found details that alter the truth.…

II.a. Rizal's multifaceted aspects include his skills, talents and knowledge about poetry, painting, academics, medicine, philosophy, history, law and international languages. These aspects only prove how intelligent and gifted Rizal is even more when he wrote literary articles to attack the Spanish oppressors in the Philippines. Rizal, as a student, manifested proficiency and excellency because at a very young age, his mother was teaching him basic skills like reading which is very important in his foundation in being such. He excelled in every class he was in except when he entered the university run by the Dominicans where blood prevails more than performance. As a son, he showed his deep love and reverence for his father by simply obeying what his father tells him. For instance, when he took the course his father wanted him to take. As a brother, Rizal also showed his trust, dependence and love for Paciano. He treated him as his second father for the fact that they have a very huge age gap. They were always by each others' side. In fact, Paciano is the first and only person who knew about Rizal flying in to Europe. As a friend, Rizal expressed his loyalty and friendliness. He gained so many friends and acquaintances in school and even in the foreign countries. One great example is his friendship with Blumentritt. They write letters to each other when they want to discuss about important matters and their closeness reached to the point wherein Rizal gained support for his novel from Blumentritt. Also, he had a great friendship with Taviel despite the fact that he has a Spanish blood. This shows how good Rizal is in making friends. Rizal, as a patriot, served as inspirartion for many Filipinos during his time. At a young age, he was already awakened by the abusive treatment of the Spanish regime to the Filipino people that was why he vowed that one day, he would compensate to what they did to his fellowmen. He served as the model to the…

The movie about Jose Rizal that was re – enacted by Cesar Montano features the life events that happened to Rizal and also features clippings from his two works namely: Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo and was re – enacted by Joel Torre and also feature how he was executed to death and how the Katipuneros seek revenge for him. I appreciate how it was filmed because it features how the Spanish Government treated the Filipinos in a way that they are degrading them. With that, Rizal was inspired to write those works to reveal the foolishness of the Spanish Government.…

Directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya, the movie focuses on the condition of the society and also to the government at the time of the Spanish Colonization. With the use of the novels, "Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo" written by himself the Filipinos have been awaken to the reality such as the abusive ways of the Spaniards towards the Filipino people. It really gave the picture of abusing and oppression of the Spanish Government and also the Friars. Because of that, Dr. Jose Rizal finally realized that writing was the best way on how to awake the hearts of these poor Filipino and that the start of the climax, the start of fighting.…

While watching the movie, I have observed similarities and differences of some scenes from today’s youth. Let’s start discussing about the similarities. First thing I have observed is the harsh treatment given by the colonials to our fellowmen especially to women and children. They, if not physically, were verbally abused by the Spaniards. I compared it to what’s happening in our society today and quite noticed a similarity. It is similar in a way that women and children, even the men too, are still abused by foreign people and sometimes even our own people. They also treat them as slaves. Child labor – forcing minors to work – has been a big issue. Women slavery – treating women as slaves, sex slaves to be exact – has been an issue too. Nowadays, our people are still abused and these are oftentimes done by those who have the power like politicians and other well-illustrated persons. They think that with their wealth and position they have the right to hurt our fellowmen. Even a small mistake or a suspicion causes the people who have the power to physically abuse our fellowmen because for them that’s how they should be treated after what they have done. Next thing I have observed is the racial discrimination. As we have discussed in class, it is one of the evils during Rizal’s time. Filipinos who were flat-nosed and brown-skinned were labeled as “Indios” and the Spaniards being pale-complexioned were termed as “Bangus” or milkfish in English. The Filipinos who were called “Indios” had little privileges unlike the “Milkfish” people who had most of the privileges to themselves. The Spaniards look at them like they were as tiny as an ant and they were of no importance to them. Foreign people thought that they were superiors against the Filipinos. They criticize them based on how they look and they treat them rudely based on how rude their criticism on their looks is. There were different beliefs in anointing officials in where Spaniards have believed that Indios have…

The film did not only depict the life of Jose Rizal during the gripping of the Spaniards’ iron hands but also the Filipinos during those darkest times before the crack of dawn. The movie did not also just settled for only Rizal and the Filipino people during the Spanish colonization, but it made a sort of movie adaptation of the two notable masterpieces of Rizal; the Noli Me Tangere and the El Filibusterismo. The movie itself was faithful to accuracy that you could see what it wants people to see and that is to see. The movie suggested us to see what had really happened to our motherland. It is to see what she had been through to keep her standing in her place in the map of the world. It is to see how many times our country had lost her identity, her dignity, her freedom, her voice, her rights, and her name. It is to see how many lives she had to remorsefully sacrifice just to keep standing. Watching the movie, I saw her. She took all pain and suffering and given up almost everything she has because she loves her children. She love the Filipinos that she kept standing and resisted the embrace of the god of the sea for us to have our feet on earth to land on. Realizing all she had borne made me proud to be molded from the earth of the Land of the Morning.…

The movie “Jose Rizal” is all about our National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal – Hislife and works, his struggles in order to free his countrymen from abuse, until his death under the hands of the Spaniards who occupied our country for a very longtime. Most of the scenes of the film took place during Rizal’s imprisonment at Dapitan wherein he meets Taviel, a Spanish officer, who will eventually defend him on his trial in court. During their meeting, Taviel asks Rizal everything about him and his works through various questions. Every answer that Rizal brought out from his mouth made Taviel realize that Rizal was indeed an innocent man. On the course of their conversation, Rizal talks about the making of his Two Novels “Noli Me Tangere” and its sequel “El Filibusterismo” which are both anti-Spanish Novels that depicts how the Spaniards rule the Philippines and how the rights of the Filipinos were abolished. Rizal portrayed himself on the said Novels – as Crisostomo Ibarra on “Noli Me Tangere” and as Simeon on “El Filibusterismo.”Going through with the movie, while Rizal is telling his story to Taviel, the scene on the movie switches from his life story then to his portrayal on his Novels. Sometimes the scene gets very difficult to follow because of the sudden switches during the scenes on the movie most especially during the time that his first novel was on the process of writing. Rizal, a brave and a man of his word, was never afraid whatever theconsequences he may suffer because of his writings that are against the friars and also to Spaniards. His goal was to free the Philippines from the unjust government of Spanish colony. In summary, the movie talks mostly of Rizal’s life until his death and the creation of his great novels. The actors and actresses who acted on the movie did a great job presenting how it was during Rizal’s time even though the said events in Rizal’s life were just written in books.…
