Joining Yearbook Club
Joining Yearbook Club during my sophomore year was one of the best decisions I made throughout my entire high school career. I was hesitant at first since the club is also a year-long class which consisted of taking photographs, interviewing students and faculty, and most importantly, creating the yearbook. While participating in this club, I learned about the importance of deadlines. I gained interpersonal skills from interacting with other students and conducting interviews for the yearbook. Also, I connected with many classmates on a personal level and formed new friendships that I still hold dear to my heart.

Coming into Christopher Newport, a definite goal of mine was to find my best friends. I wanted to find the people who I would have standing next to me on my wedding day, cry with, laugh with, and eat an entire pizza with and not feel the least bit guilty. I know it is an extremely cheesy antidote, but not once did I think I would find that in any sorority.…

The extracurricular activity that had an influential impact on the plans for my future was the Future Farmers of America. While in this organization, I have received multiple experiences in operating in the greenhouse, commuting to a fish farm, memorizing facts about the organization. This organization started by giving me the opportunity to begin experiencing stuff outside of the normal classroom. This organization taught me to stand up for myself and it started teaching me that I can do anything I set my mind to, such as winning science fair to advance to the National Convention in Kentucky. In this organization that anything is possible if you put the effort into making it happen. I learned that the people help make the organization, but…

Many parents were unwilling to participate, but I was persistent in making sure that they were up to date and kept in the loop. I even instructed the secretary to send out more emails, and, as a committee, the officers sought to personally reach out to all club members to make sure that they were meeting the monthly requirements and participating in all club sponsored events. Over the course of a month, I decided to change some policies and I instituted a social media page in order to make the club more accessible to everyone. It turns out, that more and more students began to interact with us more and things were finally getting back on track. I, and the rest of the officer corps, had decided that working with students instead of telling them exactly what to do, was the best approach to dealing with high school students of all abilities. This took awhile for me to learn, but it was worth it; many students live busy lives and I had to learn how we could work with them in order to achieve our goals. I wanted to make sure that everyone had the opportunity to pursue his or her own interest while still meeting the requirements of the club that they signed up…

I enjoyed every part of the process of making the yearbook, from taking pictures to editing them, to interviewing my classmates to writing about them. Everything that I had to do was so enjoyable. The best part was leaving my mark on something lasting. In this age of technology, there is not much that lasts beyond the digital world, and flipping through a solid book, that I put work into creating, was enlightening for me. My time on the yearbook staff seems fleeting, and I wish that it could last I bit…

Before I had even started high school I hit a very deep depression. I struggled with it for years. I felt I had no family and no friends. It was a very hard time for me. I didn't enjoy talking about my feelings or being around people due to the fact that I felt I just annoyed those around me. Despite this, I continued doing what I loved most: music. I began marching band my eighth grade year and loved the feeling of being on the field in the lights when our assistant band director would come over the loud speaker announcing the "McClain Marching Tigers and Tigerettes". It helped me find and accept who I am. I gained confidence and learned to lead and understand. It even introduced me to my closest friend whom introduced me to his friend group, giving me the first group of friends I had in my life. I've met so many new people and learned so many new skills throughout my marching career and I look forward to finishing out my senior year with the people who have been there with me from the beginning.…

One of my most defining experiences to date has been my involvement with the colorguard squad at my school. The colorguard squad is an auxiliary unit that is part of the marching band. We perform with the band at Friday night football games during halftime while spinning flags and rifles to the music. To me, colorguard is so much more than that. Freshman year when I went to tryouts I was terrified. I did not have any friends trying out with me; I was walking into a gym full of older girls whom I had never met. To my surprise, being on the squad for the past three years has been such a defining achievement during high school for me. Without the squad I would have had a completely different experience in school. I learned the value of hard work…

Club, which has taught me a lot of different skills, but the biggest skill that I feel most affected me in learning is taking action. Every year in H.O.P.E. we would decide to raise money and awareness for a different cause. My freshman year we decided to buy life straws for people in need in different countries. We got to witness how the life straws works by putting a lot of dirty water in a container and the drinking it with the life straw. During my sophomore year we decide to get a hydration station for the elementary and middle school kids. I really loved this experience because I still remember how excited the kids were to get their turn on filling up their canteens. It felt really good being able to educate the kids about recycling and using canteens instead of water bottles, so they use less plastic bottles. During junior year we raised money to help give a jungle gym to G3. This year we decided that we wanted to give money to make a well for people that have to walk miles just to get fresh water. The H.O.P.E. Club has really helped me learn that anyone can take action on problems in the world that are big or small. We just have to dedicate time and effort to get things…
