Book Review of Wooden on Leadership
Book Review: “Wooden on Leadership”

John Wooden is a legendary basketball coach, best known for his UCLA dynasty, which won an unprecedented and unthinkable 10 national championships in 12 years. That stretch included an 88-game win streak and four perfect seasons. But Wooden’s proudest accomplishments are not those of which are collected in the annals of sports history. And they have little to do with winning or losing.

In his book “Wooden on Leadership,” the coach reveals that he never focused on his teams’ records or gauged success or failure on wins versus losses. Rather, he defined success as “peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.” Wooden told his players that there would always be someone who is faster, stronger or jumps higher, so they should focus their collective energy and attention toward something they could control: maximizing their potential. This lesson, along with other teachings revealed in the book, are applicable to all of us, not just jocks.

While many of Wooden’s theories and techniques were refined through the years via trial and error, critical thinking and constant analysis, many of his philosophies are based on messages passed down by his father, Joshua Wooden, who is referenced quite a few times in the book. Wooden seemed most proud of his dad’s ability to endure terrible setbacks, from the loss of daughters to the family’s beloved farm, and remain optimistic and blame-free throughout. This is a trait I personally appreciate most in people. In fact, Wooden’s way of articulating it, “Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things turns out,” is very similar to my favorite saying: “The best things happen to those who make the best of the things that happen to them.”

Wooden tackles a variety of character traits and values in the book that he sees as essential to the pursuit of perfection as an individual as well

    The three different concepts or ideas I agreed with and like the most were -“I’m tired of hearing all this talk from people who don’t understand the process of hard work—like little kids in the back seat asking ‘Are we there yet?’ Get where you’re going 1 mile-marker at a time.”,Five Day-to-Day Goals 1)Respect and trust your teammates 2) Have a positive impact on someone else 3) Dominate your opponent 4) Be responsible 5) Act like a champion, and last but not least Locker room sign: “Don’t Come Back Until You’ve Improved”. The reason I liked the first quote was that you could not be the best in one day you have to work on your craft every day and the only way you will improve is by doing so. My reasoning for choosing the second quote is because those five goals would make you a better person on and off the court or field. Lastly, I chose the last quote because there is no reason for leaving the locker room every day and possibly being the same player you were before every time you leave the locker room you should want to get better and push yourself to do so.     Former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani give in his book, appropriately called “Leadership”, his personal view on the important factors that should encompass leadership. In sixteen chapters he shares the views he learnt over the length of his career in combination with striking examples of his own professional and personal life. When he started to work on his book in the spring of 2001, also his last year of his term as mayor of New York, he did not know that his leadership qualities would be put to the test on last time in September of that year. When on September 11th 2001, two planes crashed into the World Trade Center, mayor Giuliani was in the middle of it all. Not only figuratively, being the mayor of the City, but also literally. He found himself near the sight when the planes hit the tower, and had to run for his life when the first tower collapsed. The events that happened that day and in the days after 9/11, made mayor Giuliani decide to add his experiences during this period to his book. He added two additional chapters, one at the beginning and one at the end. The chapters describe how he experienced the events that happened that day and how the city recovered in the weeks following 9/11. These chapters, like the rest of the book, have a narrative style to them. They show what kind of decisions Giuliani had to make as a leader, but also what he experienced and felt as a person. Although these two chapters do not give the reader any real lessons in leadership, it definitely adds value to the rest of the book. It presents one of the most extreme situations a leader can find himself in and how to deal with such a situation. It complements the other chapters by acting as an example, on top of the examples given already, to help explain the views Rudolph Giuliani has on leadership.     The leadership book I chose was “ When Teams Work Best: 6,000 Team Members and Leaders Tell What it Takes to Succeed” by Frank Lafasto and Carl Larson. Frank Lafasto and Carl Larson observed 6,000 team members and leaders to teach individuals functional and dysfunctional ways of leadership. In the prologue, Lafasto and Larson discuss the Five Dynamics of Working Together. This includes team member, team relationships, team problem solving, team leadership, and organization environment. These are each described in the five chapters. Lafasto and Larson also talk about teamwork and collaboration in the prologue. This refers to people with different views and perspectives coming together, putting aside their narrow self -interests, and discussing issues openly and supportively in an attempt to solve a larger problem or achieve a broader goal. This concept is used throughout the book. From chapter one What Makes a Good Team Member, the most significant part of the chapter was learning what how an effective team member adds value to the team by addressing issues, building confidence and trust, demonstrating personal leadership, and bringing out the best thinking and attitude of everyone on the team. The three variations of collaboration are collectively oriented team members improve personal performance of teammates, good intentioned and desire to work collaboratively but difficulty fitting their behaviors to their intentions or desires, and egocentric members are competitive or have placed themselves beyond ethical and moral boundaries.
