John Toone, the Builder

John Toone was born at Mount Nod, England on June 14, 1787. He was the father of John Toone the cello playing pioneer.

He was apprenticed at Baggington, with a Mr. Gunn; afterward went to Leamington, and became acquainted with his future wife Elizabeth Masters. He started to walk to London with only seven-shillings-and-sixpence in his pocket, which sum was spent before he arrived at his destination. A man met him on the way and asked him to help get hay; he thereby obtained a good dinner of bacon and cabbage, and then went on to London, where he got lodgings with an old man who took a liking to him, and taught him to write and spell; he remained there twenty weeks and saved 20 pounds.
